Black screen after XP splash screen

I just downloaded the latest Nvidia WHQL drivers for my 8800gt (link). I installed the drivers and rebooted with no problem. Then I went back into Control Panel clicked uninstall for "Nvidia drivers" and chose the option to "uninstall all, except display drivers." This prompted me to reboot again. Now, after the XP splash screen I just get a black screen. When I go into Safe Mode I can get as far as the login screen, but my keyboard and mouse wont work preventing me from logging in! I've tried using three different keyboards (USB and ps/2). All keyboards work fine in BIOS. I also tried using a different card (x1950 Pro) and I still get the black screen. Both cards work fine in another computer. I cant think of any way to get into Windows and roll back to a previous driver. My guess is some OS file got corrupted but I prefer to solve this without formatting. Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance!

clicked uninstall for "Nvidia drivers" and chose the option to "uninstall all, except display drivers."

When you did that, you also uninstalled the chipset drivers for your motherboard. Normally, I would expect Windows to just complain after that, but apparently it decided to throw a tantrum instead.

Press F8 immediately after the BIOS POST screen and use the "Last Known Good Configuration" option. This might get you back into Windows normally.

I've tried every option using F8 and they either reproduce the black screen after the XP splash or I'm able to get to the login screen but kb and mouse lock up. I've tried 2 USB and 2 ps/2 keyboards and all refuse to work at login but work fine in BIOS and POST.

Perform a reapir install of windows. This should allow you, at the very least, to get into safemode after the reboot. Then you'll be able to reinstall the motherboard drivers.
