I don't know why but this news hit me kind of hard. It was similar to the Paul Walker news and Kobe Bryant news. Like WTF this shouldn't be happening to people this young. I also had no clue he was battling cancer.

Part of it is that I'm turning 39 this year and hearing people die that are super famous and close to your age really makes you think about your mortality. Like this guy had millions in the bank and money couldn't buy him a cure to his disease. That is kind of scary to think about.

Damn man, RIP Black Panther.

holy crap, the fact he kept it a secret in this day and age is beyond insane

colon cancer is scary and it seems like it's hitting more people i know or know of. killed my friend's dad back when he was in his 30s. so after a ton of lower stomach pain this past year i went and got checked for it even though i'm technically too young.

My wife explained it to me once like this: movies are intimate - they're in your home, and thus actor is invited into your home. You react to them & relate to them. It's almost like you know the person, because you get sucked into the story world. Particularly for nice people who are relatable in movies, when they die IRL, we feel it as a loss, because we are familiar with them. I'm a fan of the Fast & Furious series; the news of Paul Walker's death hit me surprisingly hard, I'd imagine because he was sort of like the normal relatable dude in the movies & seems like a legit dude in-person. I think he was in like half a dozen of the movies, all of which I've seen several times. Same deal with Black Panther, I've seen it multiple times, and Chadwick in particular seemed like a pretty cool dude.

I remember when Michael Jackson died, it hit me surprisingly hard as well. Aside from the various issues surrounding him, he was an icon growing up, everyone always did the Thriller dance at Halloween parties, we all did the moonwalk as kids, he was just such a part of the fabric of grade-school pop culture growing up in the 80's & 90's. It's an odd thing to feel a loss of someone you've never actually met, but are still a part of your life, whether you've spent hours watching their performances or listening to their music or whatever. People like Chadwick contributed to our entertainment, which is something most of us hold dear, and I think that's a big part of the reason it hits us so hard...they're part of our downtime that we find enjoyable & suddenly they're gone :(

I have a lot of family who have gone through cancer & I have no idea how he filmed a movie AND looked jacked and had the energy to workout & shoot scenes. Chemo leaves you pretty wasted, as do the medications & just fighting it. He must have had some serious inner drive to do what he did!

iirc the Dexter guy went through something similar while filming his show, he was able to keep it under wraps & stick with his job & enabled all of the show's staff to keep their jobs. Admirable!

RIP. That sucks and had no idea he was so ill. Colon cancer is what took my brother @ 34, less than a year from diagnosis, too.

Man, he was awesome as Jackie Robinson and James Brown.

I was wondering why he looked thinner compared to this previous movies. R.I.P.
Was looking forward to the sequel with Namor (the Sub-Mariner) as antagonist as was planned.

I saw the report last night and was shocked. He was a good actor and seemed like a decent guy. I had no clue he battled cancer for 4 years. Way too young.

Well, this wasn't the news I wanted to wake up to. He was such a presence in all of his roles. Also died on baseball's Jackie Robinson day :(.

Well put. I've never thought of it that way.
Kobe's death hit me so incredibly hard. He was such a fixture of my teenage years and college; and brought so much incredible joy, awe, and inspiration to myself, friends, and family. He was like a part of "our" family for two decades, and gave the city of LA so much. I didn't realize I was shedding tears when I finally realized he was gone.

Really sad. He had some iconic roles I was not aware of, like playing Jackie Robinson, James Brown and Thurgood Marshall. Will have to watch those films now.

For some reason the only celebrity death that really hit me hard was Bourdain. Even Robin Williams, who I absolutely adored, didn't floor me. Bourdain I actually wept and wrote him a tribute post.

Kobe and his 13 year old slammed me into reality so quickly, I had whiplash. My dad passed this year days from his birthday and now Chadwick. I turned 41 this year, and I have to admit, this year fucking blows.

So young to have colon cancer. Very sad.
His favorite role for me was as Jackie Robinson in "42".

Chadwick ended up donating some of his salary to get me to the number that I had asked for. He said that that was what I deserved to be paid.

The star went on to admit this was "about the most astounding thing that [she's] experienced", before suggesting: "That kind of thing just doesn't happen. It's just unfathomable to imagine another man in that town behaving that graciously or respectfully."

I don't get it. For a period of time his death got more air time than the 100's of thousands of deaths from COVID.
  • good actor, check
  • had fans, check
  • nice guy, probably
  • Had family and people that cared for him, that are grieving, check
  • So do 200,000 other friends and families of people that have died of COVID.
PS. This is NOT a political post, just a comment on how screwed up societies priorities are.
