I attended a black history event, which I found very entertaining and learned a few interesting facts today. The event was ran like a theater in which actors portrayed historic black icons. Afterwards, there was a few quick trivia questions and learned a few interesting things.

1. Uncle Tom is a racist word to describe a black man who does the white mans bidding on a slavery plantation. Samuel L Jackson in Django came to mind when they talked about this.

2. Blacks are the second highest group to be HIV infected yearly, right behind gays. Being black and gay is the highest.

3. NAACP was created by whites, Jews to be exact, but rarely are they ever given credit.

This thread started innocuously enough, but will end in a hail of racial slurs.

hah, i think so too. It's hard to mention skin color without someone jumping down my throat. Everyone was encouraged to get HIV tested and there was free testing provided at the event. I got tested and came back negative. One guy in line asked if I was gay, probably because my skin color wasn't the same as his.

J. Edgar Hoover's FBI tried to blackmail MLK into committing suicide with a secret video of him in a hotel room with his mistress.

http://www.archives.gov/research/jfk/select-committee-report/part-2e.html

The nature of the Bureau's campaign against Dr. King is vividly illustrated by one incident. Shortly after Director Hoover's press conference in November 1964, in which he referred to Dr. King as the country's "most notorious liar," (50) a package was mailed to Dr. King. It contained an anonymous diatribe against the civil rights leader and a copy of an electronic surveillance tape, apparently to lend credence to threats of exposure of derogatory personal information made in the letter. (51) The committee was unable to locate the original letter, but an apparently authentic copy was found in the files of Assistant Director Sullivan. The final paragraph clearly implied that suicide would be a suitable course of action for Dr. King:

King, there is only one thing left for you to do. You know what it is. You have just 34 days in which to do (this exact number has been selected for a specific reason, it, has definite practical significance). You are done. There is but one way out for you. You better take it before your filthy fraudulent self is bared to the Nation. (52)

In addition to Sullivan's admission of involvement in the scheme in testimony before the Senate select committee.7 (53) the committee received evidence raising the possibility that the package was delivered to Assistant to the Director Belmont prior to mailing.(55) If this was the case, the committee considered it highly likely that Director Hoover had before-the-fact knowledge of the action.

Based on the news:

American blacks are more uppity than they've ever been.

I Think just the fact that there is <insert ANY color> month = racist

Why are they celebrating a color again?

Black history month
Black college
Black entertainment TV

Can white people do ANY of those things without hell breaking lose?

Why do we need to? But then again why do they need to? I bet it's about the money Jesse Jackson can make off the deal.

Never read the comic strip, it began after my interest in newspaper comics went away.

But I tried to watch the tv show, and kept watching it because it seemed like there was something good and deep and meaningful to the show, tried my best I eventually had to give up and just accept that "I don't get it." I didn't learn anything from that show.
