Seriously? When have I said anything to that effect? My comment was sarcasm, as our purpose in Somolia certainly was one of a humanitarian nature. The warlords were running amock, stealing the international aid food and medicine, so we stepped in to make sure things were done right.

Somolia is still fvcked today because we pulled out. Too bad they didn't have weapons of mass destruction, or maybe we'd help them some more.

It was a great movie but I thought it was sad what happened to them. I haven't really watched it since. A few of them would have been saved if the Sec of Defense had allowed the Army the M1 tanks they had asked for. They would have plowed over those barriers the Humvee task force could not and got to them easily.

It's been a long time since I've watched the movie, back when it was in theatres, so I probably don't have all the fine details remembered...

But I didn't like it at all.

I understand not leaving men to be captured & likely killed... but that versus what happened trying to rescue them, another lost helicopter, dozens more U.S. lives lost, didn't they state thousands more Somolians died, conflict was greatly escalated... and the explaination given at the end is simply that I wouldn't understand why they do what they do. So what did I just pay my money & devote my time to seeing?

actually, (and if you read the other post as this has been said so many times before) it has been determined by even the little bird pilots themselves and some BH crew cheifs ect, that a 130 would have caused an extreme hindrence to the support that very well saved those mens lives that night....the interference that it would have caused havng a specter would have caused more harm then good....

You could never understand. The bonds formed between operators of their calibre are unfathomable to those outside their ranks.

if you die, we will get you out, even if 50 men die in the process, the 51th man will bring your body out....one of the special forces traditions and codes that has been lived by since the vietnam war...you cannot understand until you go through what those men do...

i'm thinking if they had the ac-130, they wouldn't have needed the little birds...they could have loitered longer, had more firepower, were just as accurate (if not more so) and the initimidation factor of seeing it reign fire below would have scared the sh!t of the skinnies...

edit: If i'm not mistaken, the request to use them got turned down in the movie...not sure how accurate in real life that was though...

in my opinion its not great of a war flick, but as a book its awesome. one line in the book that summed it all up is when Clinton was briefed on what was going on, both by his advisors and CNN. his words were

"how could this have happend"
