Thanks for the input everyone - I just saw Black Hawk Down and wow...I didn't expect to see so much action. When people in this thread were saying it was emotional, I didn't think so at first but towards the end, tears were forming in my eyes. I also heard a lot of sniffles around me.

<< Although this version I believe simplifies the reason the US was there and shows FAR FAR less civilian casualties than happened in real life (I mean big time)...

The only difference between a civilian and a combattant in Mogadishu was the distance they were from the nearest weapon. Plus, the "civilians" were being used as shields by the ones with guns. If the gunner was killed, another "civilian" would pick it up and continue. Such innocent "civilians".
>>

There is definitely some truth to that but this movie took care to avoid showing weaponless people shot. If I was that guy in the chopper with the mp5 I personally would have shot everyone moving to get them the hell away, so I don't hold it against them, but in the book one of the humvee gunners shoots his gun into a sizable crowd, many of whom are unarmed. I think the movie could have included that.

I saw it today as well... There really is no comparision between the two movies. Behind Enemy Lines was just a popcorn movie. Blackhawk Down was a "real" movie. Pretty gruesome.

i don't know if it would be possible, but if we had just given those gun ships free reign to shoot any crowd they saw maybe our casualties would have been far less:p we weren't allowed to shoot unless shot at right?

We now have up-armored HMMWVs in our arsenal gentlemen. The number of casualties and lives they would have saved in this particular conflict you could count on two hands a foot maybe. The new ones are heavily armored and can withstand considerably more small arms fire without hull breach vs. the old turtle back HMMWVs. Also, the gunner now can put the top hatch up to his rear as a rear "shield" against small arms file also.

I can't give you too many more specifics on the new HMMWVs because I don't know what's classified and what's not, but each door weighs a couple hundred pounds by itself.

This is a repost.

FYI my uncle was in vietnam and he told me only a few things. One of those was the fact that when he was about to shoot the rockets (gunshp he would announce it loudly to the crew because of the shock, he announced it once and then shot his rockets, the gunner was shooting at the time and was shaken out of control so much that he shot rounds from the door through the copter. Luckily the pilot seats were armored, he was ok until he was really shot down.

If you don't know, VERIFY FIRST THEN POST, or don't post at all. I usually don't post anything these days about specifics on equipment and characteristics for that very reason.

Behind Enemy Lines had some cool scenes but wasn't that great of a movie.

BHD has been playing here in NYC for 3 weeks and I still haven't seen it yet. Soon, soon. After finals.

I saw Behind Enemy Lines a few weeks ago, it was alright. Just got back from seeing Black Hawk Down and there's no contest, BHD is the better of the two.
