I think my first burner was an Imation 4x DVD burner. It was 399.99 I think.

Paid $650 for a HP 6020i SCSI CD-burner (6X read, 2X write) and about $100 Adaptec SCSI interface (2920C) in August 1997. IIRC, blanks cost almost $4 each. Buffer under-runs were common if your computer was not "fast enough". Coasters was an expensive thing to have. 🙁

There was usually a piece of paper in a computer box or text on the outside to denote you could not copy it.

I don't know how someone wouldn't realize it was stealing.
