going camping this weekend in a region known for high black fly populations

anyone have any tips for avoiding their wrath?

I heard those propane based mosquito traps work great on them, anyone have experience with them?

How to Avoid Black Flies
  • Wear protective clothing (e.g. long sleeves and pants).
Wear light colours such as; orange, yellow, light green, and blue. Light colours are less attractive than dark colours.
Black flies are most active in the morning, late afternoon and on warm, overcast days.
Black flies are most bothersome in the bush rather than open country.

Somewhat of a generic approach, but it "should" work as it works against many types of gnats and flies here.

Wear long sleeves and full length pants.

Get some pure DEET (100% stuff, not the low concentration of many popular brands) and rub it on exposed skin, save for the parts that might let sweat get it in your eyes.

Light up a King Ed cigar, any insect caught in the cross-fire will surely die.

Go outside only when there is a breeze.

long sleeves & pants
don't shower very often
eat lots of garlic
don't wash your hair much during the black fly season
