Black Clergy Denounces 'Racially Motivated Attacks' on Condoleezza Rice

"These cartoonists believe that the liberal views of the Washington Post and New York Times somehow provides cover for them to engage in racist attacks upon Dr. Rice and other minority in the Bush Administration," said Oliver N.E. Kellman, Jr., executive director of the FBLC, in a statement.

"Mr. Danzinger's, Mr. Oliphant's and Mr. Trudeau's racist depictions of Dr. Rice are of the most twisted Ku Kluz Klan/Skinhead Mindset. I am astonished that the NAACP, Rainbow-Push and other traditional civil rights groups did not denounce this type of trash from the very first day it was reported," Kellman said in a statement.

"Instead, they are silent witnesses to this racially motivated character assassination because of Dr. Rice's politics," he added. "The FBIC believes in the advancement of all Americans, no matter their political affiliation, gender or ethnic background.

"Dr. Rice has been singled out for persecution by a handful of bigoted liberals who have characterized her as a steppin and fetchin sambo," said Kellman, adding that he believes "they feel threatened and disturbed by the fact that Dr. Rice will soon be the most powerful Black woman in the United States as Secretary of State."

The FBLC is calling on the cartoonists and both papers to publicly apologize to Rice. "White liberals in the media have come to feel that they can openly attack any Black conservative that chooses to serve the nation," the group said.

The group is also urging the Justice Department to conduct a full investigation into these incidents and whether the civil rights of Rice and outgoing Secretary of State Colin Powell were violated "by the promotion of racial bigotry towards persons of color serving their nation."

Cheers to the Faith Based Leadership Council for boldly speaking the truth!

"they feel threatened and disturbed by the fact that Dr. Rice will soon be the most powerful Black woman in the United States as Secretary of State."

How about feel threatened because she is incompetent. I could care less what color or sex she is, it is her incompentence that stands out.

Also, how come this group doesn't have a website, and it seems to me that the only google search that pops up for it is with regard to this article. Seems like another made up astroturf group to me.
And the only time this Kellman guy shows up before is bashing Kerry for something.

So we have one Bush supporter who claims to represent 200 "Black Clergy," but there is now website and no way to find out who those 200 are. This is great. Maybe Kellman stands for Ken Mellman? 😀

"The Faith Based Leadership Council (FBLC)(formerly the National Faith Based Initiative Coalition), a group of over 200 black clergy and members of the Faith Based Community..."

Oh, they changed their name for some reason.
I see 10 names on the endorsement page. Where are the other 190 "black clergy?"

I'm a liberal, and I denounce racist and sexist attacks on Condoleeza Rice. You don't have to like her politics, but her gender and race should NEVER be an issue. I'm glad that women and blacks have come as far as they have. But to think the movement is over is stupid. They, and ALL minorities, and otherwise oppressed people have a long way to go before true equality is achieved.

Being a liberal myself, I agree with you--very strongly in fact.

I will qualify that, however, by saying I question how racially motivated those cartoons actually are; You should look at the cartoons and come to your own conclusion. In the general case, we should not allow those who publish racist depictions to hide, just because they agree with us politically.

My anti-racist feelings greatly outweigh my partisan feelings.

Obviously, there are those in this thread who had already made up their mind about what they were going to believe before looking at any of the facts

[Edit] Just to clarify. I'm not implying you in that last sentence, judasmachine.

Kellman should hear what one of my black neighbors calls her. 🙂

By the way, when did people start thinking that political cartoons were supposed to be politically correct? The art form goes back at least two centuries. I once read a book filled with 19th century poltical cartoons and they were downright RAUNCHY. Political cartoons are supposed to be edgy. If any of these cartoonists were to drop back from the edge they'd be making place mats for a living.

As far as I'm concerned, they can call Rice just about any name they want, but BABY KILLER will do.

Anyway, these crocodile tears for racism by Republicans and other right wingers won't WASH the hands of the unclean in this administration.

Whether Republicans' tears are real or not, shouldn't we be against all forms of racism regardless? Even if it's goes against what partisan logic would tell us?

Hmmm . . . A conservative black cartoonist characterizes John Kerry as one of those white wealthy elitists who care nothing for the brothers. Hardly racist - just another political opinion.

Nobody seemed to care when Maddy albright was put into the same position. And you cant argue he incompetence. They considered it the greatest day since sliced bread was invented.
