Hello all. I'm stumped.

Problem thus: Aunt's computer emits a LOUD squeal upon bootup.

Her computer is a 3 year old HP (Cel 500) running Win ME. Complete budget box, onboard sound.

I have no idea what is causing it. Only solution offered at this point is to unplug speakers. I have had no success searching FAQ's and knowledge base.

May I have your thoughts on this?

Check the fan belt? ;)

You suggest the sound is coming from the speakers, so check the Sounds and make sure some streange sound is not set to play on boot up and that volume is not at max and overloading the spkr. You might check sound drivers and stuff while you are there.

If its a mobo boot signal, maybe there is a way in the bios to turn off mobo boot codes.

Dammit, I knew I'd forget important things.

Noise occurs approx. 5 seconds after powerup. It is a motherboard beep gone wild.

As I understand things, virtually every PC gives a POST beep even if everything is ok. This isn't a beep so much as a french horn type sound.

Thank you, I will try to disable the post beep in BIOS.

Regards

Computer used to give normal POST beep.

Currently emits improbably loud uncontrolled squeal for a few seconds at the point when the usual post beep would occur.

BIOS does not allow for post beep alteration.

If it's the internal speaker, how come the sound goes away when you unplug the external speakers?!?!?

The use of the plural implies the external speakers. Unless you have stereo internal speakers, Chuck? :D

he he he....never know how someone is going to mod their comp. i was just asking for clarification.
seti920 , sure it's not a fan having a hard time getting going ? does it do it at all startups , cold and reboot?
still haven't heard if unplugging the speaker(s) helped.
good luck
