Bizarre nVidia Overclock Problem

I have a new, crappy, 6200 card. I am trying to overclock. I can overclock the memory, no problem, however, if I touch the GPU clock speed, my machine just plain hangs. Mouse pointer no move. Even if I underclock it, it hangs.

My machine is quad=boot (win98, 2k, xp, and linux). This problem occurs in all 3 windows variants. I have not tried linux overclocking.

My processor is an Athlon XP-2100+ overclocked to 138mhz - the BIOS says 2200+.

And, I'm using an ECS K7S5A motherboard - SiS 735 chipset.

Could it be the bus overclocking killing me? I guess that's one thing to try.

drop your fsb (CPU) to stock, if you don't have a AGP/PCI lock that could be the cause of your problems perhaps...

Yeah, tried dropping the FSB to stock (133) and that didn't help. What is an AGP/PCI lock? You mean the physical little thing that holds the card in the slot?

Its interesting in that the coolbits settings has an auto-check which says I should be able to run faster, and the test button works fine, but once you apply the settings - BLAMMO!

I love pie too! By far it is the best dessert available.

nah, it holds the pci/agp frequency at the correct level regardless of your fsb. Older mobos (like my ASUS A7V8X) don't have it. That's not your problem then tho...

I've done some research on this problem and it looks like all BFG and 3dfuzion (maybe more companies too) 6200s have some sort of clock lock. Some people say you can overclock if you use 76.44 drivers, but then you lose the performance gains of the 80 series forceware. I say just be happy with a good memory overclock. You may be able to fix the gpu clock problem by changing the default bios clock but that would be a big risk to your card.

Yeah, my card is a 3DFuzion.... In any event, I was able to overclock (relatively conservatively) by updating my BIOS. My card now runs at 410/530 in BIOS and I use Coolbits to OC the ram to 550. By doing that, I got about a 20% performance boost. Not too shabby.

I hand a PNY 6800GT and it just would not over clock at all. I tried every thing NVSilencer, coolbits, Bois tweeks, Ultra Bios, nothing would work it would just hang. So I figured it was just the luck of the draw. Some cards do and some don't. Now this EVGA card I have now easly over clocks. I wish I had better help for ya. Good Luck
