Is there an advantage to having a high upload to download share ratio?

My share ratio is near 3 (for every 1Mb I download, I upload 3Mb)

Does it mean faster speeds for me or anything?

I haven't noticed. There are some sites I do research at that do require a high ratio to continue downloading but speedwise, haven't noticed.

generally speaking, when your upload speeds aren't limited, your download speeds will be faster. I don't recall the technical reason for this but I did read it on a network-technical site somewhere (not BT-related). So naturally, for BT, you're going to see slower speeds during a download if your upload is capped.

If you're on a registered-member BT site, you may see ratios and kept stats. This doesn't affect your speeds but it does affect your standing with some of those sites. Some people with lower ratios may experience wait times or even bans if it is too low. But that's about it. If you are a very giving person with even a 1:3 ratio (usually stated as 3.0), it won't give you any kind of advantage over someone who has a 1:1 (1.0) ratio. Well, maybe not completely true... at least you can leech that much more without having to upload anything and you're still in the green. ;)

Some places will ban you if you have a really crappy (or even not so crappy) share ratio. Some are actually extremely strict about it. One anime one a long time ago I got banned because I downloaded a file quickly, but got disconnected afterwards. I reconnected and got banned because it checks your share ratio when you connect to the tracker and since for that one file I was at something like .1 (since download is a lot faster than upload) even though I was still seeding it. So they recommended you cap your download to your upload to prevent problems like that.
That might be an extreme case, but a lot of trackers have some type of monitoring to ban complete leechers.
