I still really like the song. Unfortunately, because they used a Rolling Stones sample, they had to give all of their earnings from the song (a big hit in the UK, IIRC) to the guy who owned the rights (Oldham?).

haha I love this song...but am an idiot when it comes to the sampling....which part is actually sampled? The orchrestal part>?

I think the Verve were one of the best bands of the '90s, actually. Unfortunately they were always really serious IV drug users (there's a great song on their first album called "History" about this), and I think the shock of losing ALL the royalties on their breakthrough single must have just about killed them. I saw the Verve live in 1997 at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco - great show.

The entire orchestral part (that is, virtually the whole song!) is sampled. Oddly, it was sampled not from a Rolling Stones song, but from some weird late-60s album with orchestral arrangements of RS songs.

Apparently the Rolling Stones' former road manager owns the rights to it, and thus all the royalties to Bittersweet Symphony. IIRC they used it without permission and he sued and won. You'd think they could have worked something out, since it was a huge new revenue stream from a previously-worthless recording, but I guess he decided he'd rather have 100% than 50%.

Great song, whenever I hear it I think of that movie "Cruel Intentions" when Sarah Michelle Gellar walks out of the hall at the end of the movie.

Yup can never get tired of that song

Gotta disagree with that, probably because I'm a Verve fan. This is one of my least favorite songs on Urban Hymns. Drugs Don't Work is much better. So is Lucky Man.

I used to hate it when people confused them with The Verve Pipe and that godawful breathmints... err freshmen song. Ugh.

Aren't you the one who made the Coldplay thread? What's with AT and having good musical taste all the sudden?

funny, i was about to ask "what's with AT and having horrible musical taste all the sudden." seriously, this is a wretchedly boring song.

had to break up all the positivity in this thread.

...god, everyone seriously likes this tune?

This thread reminded me how great the Urban Hymms cd was, so I've been listening to it quite a bit the past day or so.
