If this means custom models at launch for the 390, that would be huge.

The cooler also looks rather small. If they are reusing the same coolers as the 200 series. If performance and price is as rumored. I will bag myself a vapor X on launch.

Despite what the thread says about being a R9 390, look close at the 9 in 390 on the picture. That's a 380! 8pin plus 6 pin. The 9 would be straight down on the left or slightly curve. My eyes are not the best but that sure looks like an 8 to me. It this a cheap attempt to stir up rumors? Plus a 390 with that slim of a cooler?

Sorry for being so cynical but seriously, blow up that picture and tell me it's definitely a 9 in the 3_0 number instead of an 8.

Look at the 9 in "R9" - those two look identical.

You could be right, I was skeptical at first, but at the same time, that is a very odd font that loops the 9's leg up a little bit, so essentially it's an 8 with a very very small cut to turn it into a 9.

destrekor, save the image and open it up in Paint. resize it 400 and it sure looks like an 8 to me!

I'm sure there'll be a reference 390X. Just interesting that there's a 390 already and it's a custom PCB

It should be custom models for launch. AMD's reference blower blows hard and they ought to learn the lesson from the 7970 & definitely R290/X launch.

The last thing they want is the hot & noisy label to tarnish an otherwise very good chip.

This time, it may well be that the WCE is the only reference design from AMD, the rest, all AIB custom models.

Who said reference blower? I was remarking about the PCB actually.

The XFX R290/X is actually one of the good ones, its very quiet at around 80C. Not as good as Tri-X or Vapor-X though but definitely smaller.

Since 390/X is rumored to use similar power to the R290/X, the smaller XFX design should do just fine, particularly on a bigger die so heat transfer is more efficient into the heatpipe cooler.

Edit: If AIBs have custom models ready then it looks like the launch may be imminent (~2 weeks!).

Guess it could be a review sample, but with rumoured launch during Computex, it would be very early for them to send those out.

Unless we're looking at a staggered launch with the 390X being the final release in June. That would give AMD some heavy duty marketing time in May.

there is a financial analyst day on May 6th at 1pm EDT. AMD definitely will talk about the 2015 and 2016 products - CPU, GPU, APUs

http://ir.amd.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=74093&p=irol-EventDetails&EventId=5183242

So my guess is AMD would want to launch the R9 390X there. If they don't launch there then its definitely at Computex on June 1st. anyway the launch is happening and I can't wait for AMD to finally bring competition to the GPU market.

Hi guys, I just registered to show you this : http://www.kdramastars.com/articles/80987/20150408/radeon-r9-390x-release-date.htm Posted yesterday.

Never heard of that site before so I don't know what the article is worth.
But if it's true... seriously, August ??

Don't want to sound like the impatient kid but I've restrained myself for a good lot of months now, running off of my CPU solely, with no dedicated card. And if this announce appears to be true, that could mean I'll be getting a 295x2 ( for 4K gaming, free-sync ).
Hunger for gaming has grown too strong.

Complete and total click bate crap ;) Nothing confirmed; nada; the strongest rumors up to now was June launch....with new info coming; I'd say more likely May as someone pointed out AMD got few things to announce; along with announcement of Cazzaro.....

It's really easy to fake a photo like that - but there's really no point in doing so. It's very exciting to see a custom cooler. After all the flak AMD took for the 290 reference coolers (rightly so), I'm glad they learned from that.

It's really starting to feel like the 300-series is AMD's "redemption series". Taking extra time to get partners involved with better coolers, taking extra time to get drivers optimized... Leaked benchmarks and shipping data were all released months ago, a working model was used at GDC... They are doing this launch right, it seems. The hype is over 9000!

Whether the image is fake or not, the number in question is clearly a 9 even before blowing the image up. The right side is straight while the left side has two slight humps and a dip in the center. One hump in the top half for the loop and one in the bottom half where the tail tucks back in a little. If it were an 8 both sides would be the same. Just look at the branding on their R9 280X boxes, the 8s they use are symmetrical.

Okay ! Don't mind my link then.

When I think about it... if the $700+ MSRP is true, would that make sense next to a cheaper and faster 295x2 ?
I mean, even if the 390X appears to be the beast we all hope for, I'm not even sure I won't be getting a 295x2 instead..
well need to see both compared in 4K gaming first.
