A friend's laptop dies, and so I figure hey i'll just pop the drive out and copy it into their new machine with my handy dandy drive reader and they'll have their data. Enter the 48 digit Bitlocker key it says. Friend didn't know what it was, or that it was enabled, or that such a thing ever existed, so obviously didn't have a key. Old computer is dead, for reasons unknown, won't charge, won't start, won't light a light. Charge brick outputting 19.4v but doesn't even light the little light next to the charge port, so I can't take it any further. Any hope for this data? Thank you.

This is solved. Fortunately the machine owner was able to come up with a valid MS id which led us to the BitLocker code needed to get her drive unlocked and transferred to her new machine. Otherwise, near as I can tell, there is no other way.
