Bit Torrent

Top Gear is catching on here like wildfire, so I was wondering:

1. Does the BBC allow dissemination of its shows?

2. To save bandwidth, isn?t Bit Torrent the best way to share videos with folks on this forum?

3. We have a lot of picture hosting space for folks in the forum, can we / should we set up some space to host Torrent seed files for legal videos? (What do you call the ?starter file? that is named something like videoname.mpg.torrent? Seedfile?)

4. Would we also need to set up a tracker?

Yeah because people were using it to get illegal files.

Never participated in them, so I would not know.

I think it is legal to spread Top Gear shows, so I know there are videos many folks on this forum are interested in that are also legal. I am guessing that as log as the video is not pron or illegal, the mods will allow it. It is just up to us to set up how to do this the way the picture hosting sites are currently set up.

If you had a legal video you wanted to share, I'm sure the mods would OK it if you PMed them.

you could probably get away with leeching off of one of the established trackers, although perhaps that's contrary to lots of people here's internet philosophy.

it's a good idea though, since we usually end up toasting any server with interesting movies on it.

All it would take is for the OP to download it, zip it up, create a torrent and host it somewhere.

From what I have seen, most (if not ALL) BT threads have been locked.

Yeah but those were threads that were obviously about getting warez/mp3s/etc

I wouldn't think there would be any problem with setting up a site to host the seeds for all the funny/cool videos that get posted around here. It would sure save on bandwidth.

Thats what I am thinking. Which is why I brought it up here. The main problem seems to be that somefolks, like myself don't know how to make a Torrent file/seed/tracker/host and where could we put the "starter" file (BTW, what is that file called?)

the gist of the process is, you first have to have the file you wish to distribute.

you then use a torrent creating program that basically sets how many chunks you want to download the file into and sets which tracker you want to use, and that creates a .torrent file.

That's the file that you then distribute to other people, and however many people have executed that torrent file using a bittorrent client then swap pieces of the file with each other until it's all done.

I've no idea how to set up a tracker, but those steps are very straightforward.

I don't know/doubt if anandtech would be willing to run a tracker, but who knows.

So, the initial file you download with the *.torrent extention is called a torrent file?

Then, doesn't that file simply point to a traker?

Now, doesn't the tracker simply watch who is connected and uploading/downloading?

If you guys keep it legal, I'll make a category on my site for BT discussions

edit: Here you guys go.

registration not required, but I will IP ban anyone who doesn't pay attention to the forum description, and I will ban anyone who posts anything illegal or questionable.

Link doesn't work for me.

Does it work for anyone else?

Alternatively, discussion of a perfectly legal application used to download perfectly legal files can certainly be held here, I would imagine..

Problem with having an ATOT tracker for the various interesting stuff is that someone has to keep a bittorrent client open seeding it. One client open for each video means only two or three videos will have people to get it off of, nevermind the slow rate of bittorrent downloads. I feel blessed if I get 25kb/sec.

Most of what I've seen locked though, are things that are obviously illegal. I can't recall ever seeing a mod lock a thread dealing with TV torrents, so I'm guessing they just don't care about those.
