Bit Torrent issue

My friend who is sharing an internet connection with me abuses the bandwidth of cable internet by constantly downloading illegal stuff using BT. Is there a way I can regulate/block his BT usage while still allowing him to surf the web, etc??

I have a D-link DI-624 router. Its only fair for me to regulate his usage... the stuff he does is illegal... and the net connection is under my account.

I have access to the 'administrator' control panel for the router, btw.

Please help!

Make sure that you change the default password/login on the router for starters.

I have the Dl-614+, close to the same model as you.

6881 is the default bit torrent port, I'd block that. Bit torrent can operate on any port though, so you're going to be hard pressed to block them all.

Another thing you could do is under the 'Advanced'(Tab) -> 'Parental Control' (sidebar button) Is block prominant Bit torrent URL's so he cant download torrents. For a good list of sites to block go to here. Otherwise just google Bit Torrent Site List or something of the similar.

Hopefully that helps, if I think of anything else I'll post it, this is just off the top of my head.

hmm... I know very little about ports and that kinda stuff, but it shouldn't be hard to figure out. yea the first thing i did when i bought the router was change the password. i also tried blocking his MAC address from accessing the network, but then he lost his connection completely, which is obviously not good.

But I do know for sure that he uses Azureus as his bittorent client and that he gets most of his trackers off isohunt.com... if that helps.

doanster, I'm surprised your friend is able to use a bittorrent client behind a NAT router because you usually need to set up port forwarding in the router to get that working. Blocking individual ports won't be completely effective since you can use alternative ports. If your router supports it you may have to block all ports except for the bare mininum you need, such as all but port 80(web) and 110 & 25(e-mail).

Give the URL blocking bit a try, close port 6881 and see if that slows him down.

Its impossible that hes abusing the bittorrent in passive mode.... You dont get very good speeds at all using that, like 5 kb/s.

close off outbound connections on all ports except maybe 80/20/21/22 and anything you might need (3389, 5901, etc)

i still cant figure out how to block ports with the router...
but I'll give the URL blocking a try though
thanks!

yeah those are all good ideas- but if you are actually concerned about it you may just want to tell/ask him to stop. If the guy is gonna be your roomate for a while, doing stuff behind his back will just piss him off. If you guys don't talk about issues that you have, its just going to lead to you hating each other, and bickering over petty stuff like a married couple. Ask him to stop, explain you don't want the FBI coming to your house - per the latest scene busts - and if he wants to download stuff fine, he can get his own internet connection.

Communication is key, especially in relationships with friends...not just SO's

I am not particularilar concerned about the FBI coming to the house as per se, its more of the fact that he's robbing all of the bandwidth. But I'll figure something out.. thanks for the help guyz
