[bit-tech] Radeon HD 7000-series rumoured for May production

No one knows when the new cards will launch. If you read this thread you will see that it could launch as early as next Monday, but if so AMD has done an amazing job at keeping it very quiet, because as of right now we know next to nothing about these cards.

On the other hand some people are speculating that they might not come out until as late as May of next year.

At this point your guess is about as good as anyone's. Personally, I would wait until at least next Monday, since that is only 6 days.

After that, I don't know. My new 2500k system is currently being gimped by a 8800GT because I decided to wait. But since I'm mostly playing The Binding of Issac and Path of Exile (neither is graphic intensive) I'm willing to wait for a bit more. If I get Skyrim for Christmas I might not be so patient.

Im wondering how much more expensive a 7xxx series card that is similar to a 6950 will be. Im just gonna order the 6950 from amazon and if theres anything that comes out within the month that is WAY better i'll suck up a fee and return it.

Hmm, rumor of a Dec 5th Radeon announcement and incredible pricing on 6800 series cards. Maybe I shouldn't have bit on that $120 6850 from NCIX with $20 rebate that's listed in Hot Deals.

I wouldn't regret. If the mid-range cards are released next month they will cost at least $250 I bet. Of course they may be just as fast as any single gpu card out today... 😛

Read that retailers still have a lot of 6850s and 6870s to unload this month. Might be a good time to pick up a card for friends and relatives, my sister wants to play the Bioware Star Wars MMO coming out soonish. Seems like sometime January for 7000 series to hit retail.

Lucky. I've been waiting on a key for months. Keysus has forsaken me 🙁

BoT:
Looks like early 2012 for the upper end of the 7000 series. Sounds like the mid range may be even further delayed(which feels backwards to me).

Would be following the same path with the 5XXX series launch. First we had 5870/5850 and later came the 5770 etc.

I actually think this time releasing the higher-end first makes sense. Since the general PC shipments are going to have some issues with HDD constraints in Q1 2012, releasing high-end discrete GPUs that are going to be bought up by the BIY market doesn't run into this limiation as much since a lot of buyers will be upgrading (so they don't care if there is a HDD shortage or not).

Also, if HD7800 series launches just 1 month later, that's not a big deal. NV released GTX460 3-4 months after GTX470/480 and did just fine. 😉
