Bishop arrested after taking 2 boys up the chimney

A bishop has set up a website in protest at being arrested after putting his two sons on top of the chimney of his home.

The Most Reverend Jonathan Blake, 52, an archbishop in the Open Episcopal Church, was arrested after neighbours complained he had put his two young boys up the chimney.

The father-of-five insisted the children were safe, and taking part in a school challenge for book week - reading a book in an unusual place.

Nathan, eight, and Dominic, seven, were spotted perched one at a time on the chimney stack of their family home, reading a book.

Neighbours called the police. He was arrested for child neglect.

"I didn't see it as unsafe because the boys are used to climbing," Mr Blake said afterwards.

"The kids were up there for about 10 minutes each as I took different pictures. I didn't think it would cause such a fuss."

Mr Blake claims he was punched in the back by a police officer and handcuffed "viciously tight".

"I have always been a great supporter of the police, but this nightmarish experience has shattered my trust in the police and their system of detention."

His wife, Annette, 49, who rushed to his aid after hearing his calls for help, was not allowed to video his arrest.

Mr Blake then claims he was kept in police custody without food or water for several hours and was not interviewed until 1pm the following day.

He was released on police bail and has since been told no charges are to be brought.

But the bishop is going to pursue a complaint and sue for false arrest, false imprisonment, assault and injury.

He hopes his website will encourage others to protest.

It does seem like a dangerous place to put your kids, what do you think?

WTF... the police can't tell someone they can't video tape something. Sounds to me like they know they fucked up, and aren't pressing charges because of it.

My kids have been on the roof of my garage. Big fricken deal. My friends and I would jump off garage roofs when we were kids. It was a game.

It's in England. They have no rights any longer.

This thread is not at all about what I thought it would be about.

Ooooh, I missed that part. Damn me for my US-centric world. 🙂thumbsup: for the no rights anymore comment)

Lord, I used to help my dad with stuff up on the roof all the time when I was a kid. Good thing we weren't a Nazi-Nanny country then or my father would have been jailed!

ya same here. after reading it tho, i was on the roof without my parents knowing all the time. i dont really see that as an arrestable offense.

I played on the roof often when I was young. Since he is 52 I am guessing his kids are 10-13, I would go on the roof alone when I was that old.

Unless I saw a picture of the roof/chimney I can't say for sure but I am betting they were in no danger.

what a story... what kind of an assignment is "read in an unusual place" anyway?

not what I expected either gents...

That would depend on where you are.

when i was 12-13 i would have to clean out the gutters of the house and the old couple across the street.

so no i don't think what he did was that bad.

I imagine it depends on the height of the chimney. I've seen some houses that would probably be fine to sit on. And some places with a crazy steep roof and a 10' chimney. I guess it'd all be common sense which I imagine the father had since there aren't any charges.
