Well people on the phone here at tech support don't want to enter their birthday when setting up their DSL service.

So if someone's birthday is such a valuable piece of data... wouldn't it be risky for these people to celebrate their birthdays? Couldn't someone be watching through their window and count how many candles on their cake with their ultra high-tech spy goggles?

Some people...

Then again, why the hell does the ISP need it?

To confirm you're over 18.

And they know someone has put in the correct date, how?

They don't, but it limits their liability a lot more than not requiring it at all.

Could they confirm your age when you signed up for this forum? What, do you want them to require you to fly there and show them your ID? How then do they know its not a fake?

then why not ask 'are you over 18'

because they don't

So the company is asking an indirect question to get a response when they could ask a much more direct question and alleviate the problem entirely.

Stupid companies.

It's not even the point, what can someone do that knows your birthday? SEND YOU A CARD? OMG!!!!!!!

Because you can find out a lot about someone with their date of birth... it's easier than you can possibly imagine. The point is, it's an unneccesary question and people are entitled to not want to give out personal information.

It really is a legal issue though. If you ask, "are you over 18," anyone can say yes. But if you ask, "what's your birthdate," and they respond with, "umm, uhhh...." then you can tell they aren't.

And if I recall correctly, I think some company was sued for asking, "are you over 18," instead of asking for b-days.

Maybe they want to know the demographics of their market? Who cares?

Not necessarily, but I don't appreciate companies that require information when they really don't need it.

Maybe they do need it? Maybe as stated above they will get sued if they don't ask?

I'd tell you that it is none of your damn business. Just like I do when the cashier at Radio Shack or Lowe's or Toys r Us asks for my phone number or address. I don't give a crap about your demographics.

Well I'd say, that's nice, but have fun not being able to browse the internet, loser.
