Example:

Diaphragm

Chance of getting Pregnant:

typical use 20%
Perfect use 9%

What do the percentages mean? Aren't they somewhat meaningless because people could be having sex 20 times a year or 200 times a year... and is that percentage per year, or per time having sex? (that would suck heh).... Also, if its over the entire time period of usage, that could be 3 months or 20 yrs depending.

Anyone else ever find this confusing?

Typically they're measured in chance per year. And the number of times having sex is whatever the average is for all the people who were involved in the study on effectiveness.

If the diapragm is 80% effective, that means on average, 1 in 5 woman using it will get pregnant every year.
the 9% failure rate with perfect use means that without any user-error, there is just under a 1 in 10 chance that it will fail in any given year and lead to a pregnancy.

It's called: The company covering their asses.

If your GF gets pregnant it must have been your own dumbass fault for misusing our fine product.

Yeah the idea with diaphragm is that you also keep track of when ovulation is going to occur and use a secondary method during that time. so it drops a bit.

My boyfriend told my daughter that the best birth control is the quarter method.

He gave her a quarter and told her to hold it between her knees... and as long as the quarter stayed their, she would not get pregnant.

:)

He did tell her that. He was trying to make the point that abstinence is the only sure fire method. And that she needed to be responsible and not mess around unless she could deal with whatever consequence came about.

Then he told her b/f that if he did anything to hurt her, or did not treat her with respect, he would wrap his hands around the b/f's neck and drop the body at his mom's feet.

;)
