Birth Certificate vs. Certification of Birth?

So I thought I was getting a birth certificate from the state registrar, but instead I got a certification of birth. Are they the same?

If they are not the same, where can I get an official birth certificate? The hospital said that I had to get it from the county, but they only provided me with a certification of birth.

You need to look into your state's rules. Should be on a website, usually called something Dept of Health and Social Services.

Many states now-a-days issue the certification of birth (computer generated document instead of original long form) and treat it just like a BC for official purposes.

Things are digital now and states don't want the expense and hassle of retrieving the original BC, copying it and certifying it etc. They'd rather just print out the certification of birth.

It's probably fine for whatever use you need it for.

Passports, at least in NY (though given passports are national unsure if this matters), require a birth certificate with a raised seal. Had to handle this today, so they haven't changed that yet.

Haha.. This has nothing to do with politics. I just want an official document for future applications such as passports and such. The certification of birth that I got doesn't have a raised seal, but it is supposedly printed on security paper with watermarks. My birth certificate had all sorts of information on it and had a raised seal.

A certificate of live birth and a birth certificate are 2 different things. I had a certificate of live birth for myself, and I was unable to use it as identification at the DMV. I had to actually get a birth certificate.

I filled out the county's birth certificate form. I should have read it closely. The option that I checked was only for a computer certification for a registered birth. I guess I have to show up in person at one of their offices. Tsk. I just wasted $17.

The issue with Obama was that they don't release the actual certificate, even to the president. You can go look at it but you can't take it with you.

I don't think you need a birth certificate since you're a abortion leftover...

I was at the hospital today, and another person said that the hospital will mail the birth certificate in a few weeks. However, from one of the info that I read, some hospitals give you a novelty birth certificate (especially something with the baby's footprint) that is not considered an official document.

I'm not in a hurry. I should have this sorted out in a month.
