Birth Certificate, how do you protect yours?

If I recall correctly, you can't get your Birth Certificate laminated for certain government reasons. Do you have some kind of plastic slit that you put it in?

Mine is looking pretty bad, entirely my fault. I'll probably be replacing it soon and wonder what the best way to take care of it would be.

Mine is just sitting in a safe deposit box. Probably in a manilla envelope or something.

Oh, it's probably near my Social Security card that is also in an unknown location and also useless.

Pft. SSN/SIN numbers are needed for emplyoment and other things, unless you have it memorized. Also, I don't have a passport yet, so I keep mine with my for border crossing. I have all my documents in my wallet.

You SHOULD have your SSN memorized. But even so you'd need it any time you get a job unless you have another document that proves citizenship (like a passport).

I thought they didn't allow that. Hmm...I'm in Canada, so perhaps I'll look into that. However, passports will be mandatory for US travel by next year, so I'll need that, anyway.

Not anymore. They even have a notice on the back that says laminating them voids them.

That being said.. I havent seen my birth certificate in years. I really should request a new one.

Protect?? Mine's thrown in my middle desk drawer, along with my college diploma, my divorce decree, and a bunch of other useless stuff.

I can get a new copy quite easily.

Sits in my wallet with a thin plastic cover on it...looking kind of beaten up though.
