Biostar- trouble w/ front usb connectors

Neos

Senior member
They were working in the older case even with the new Biosatr 6100 (S754) mATX installed.

This is a new Enermax Venus case. It has 4 leads from each of the front USBs to the new mainboard-
VCC (+5v power)
1-D (Neg signal for port) Is this the same as USB- ?
2+D(Pos. signal for port) Same as USB+ ?
Ground

The older case had a black wire labeled shield (at the end) that went to the # 10 pin (but only on one of the USB connector/plugs). This case does not (that I have found).

On the board I have JUSB2~JUSB3. On each grouping there is 5 pins, one row, and 4 other row. The #1 pin is the first of the four - at the bottom. As of now I have one lead from the front going to the lower row of 4 pins on JUSB3, and the other lead from the front to 4 of the upper 5 pins on JUSB2 (2,4,6,8)

It almost looks that I could connect both of the four leads from the front USB ports to one of the groups of pins (have not tried that yet) leaving the #9 (no pin there)& #10 open.

What am I missing? Please help if you can. Would like to download my grand-daughters pix.

Hi, Yes to questions number 2 and 3. If you are sure to connect +5 and Ground correctly the only other problem could be that signal leads(in and out) are reversed or the port is not working. The shield can be left off until you get it working. Shield just goes to ground on both ends. If you have an OhmMeter check the connector for another ground. I think it is usually next to the key, pin 9 maybe. Some MB BIOS SETUP would have to be set to allow the extra ports. Hope this helps a little, Jim

It does Jim..but there is no shield wire that I have found. Is there suppose to one there?

Thanks

Hi again, If there is no shield wire then just ignore it. There is probably no real need for a shield anyway. It has nothing to do with running your USB devices only shielding the leads from interference. Jim

Thanks for the replies, guys. One more question b4 I pull the case back out to work on it, just to make sure.

There are two USB hookups on the board - JUSB2~JUSB3 (each with 9 pins). If I am reading right (from what you said, Jim)- I can hook up both of these front ports to one of these. Am I right?

That is the way I have it now, and still no cigar. The next step is to reverse the +&- wires between the VCC & the Ground. It may be that the case mfg. hooked them up wrong at the other end. Something is odd, because they were working b4 - this same mainboard in another case.

Thanks again.

Got it fixed. The plug was loose in the front of the case. My fault - pulled it loose getting it all in place.

Thanks for the help. I will know next time better how to hook these up.

Hi, Glad you got it going. NEVER swap the +5 around. If you have or can borrow a Voltmeter check the socket for +5. The correct pin will be very close to +5, signal leads may be high but will probably be a good bit lower than the correct pin. Luck, Jim
