If you have a X-FI, I suggest you physically remove the card and stomp on it, then rebuild Windows without it on there.

And honestly, 15 dollars for Bioshock is a goddamn steal.

I've actually had this problem before.

Everything works good with sound until the plane crash and then no sound.

Adjust your audio settings...disable EAX...change from 5.1 to something else..keep toying with the settings it will work!

Okay I got this game for $10 on black friday and it is AWFUL. I didn't get very far but this game is a SS2 clone. Every single thing is copied over even the story is similar. The art style is cartoony, the graphics look horrible compared to Crysis, and the gameplay is extremely scripted. For example, when you need to catch Steinman no matter what you do the debris will fall. I electrocuted him, no response. I caught up to him and this invisible wall was there and the debris just pushed me back. The enemies are bunch a mindless, screaming maniacs that are no where near as intimidating as the many. I even have a feeling the guy that is helping will betray you turn out to be someone else like the SHODAN. So glad I only paid $10.

Don't be so emphatic, when the game was first released, 2K Forums was FILLED with people with audio issues, in fact, it was one of the first things "fixed".

I loved it. It wasn't the best gameplay wise, but it's visually stunning, and it ranks into my top favorite games for the artwork alone.

I bought it on launch day in 2007 and don't remember having problems with it. Played on a E6400 with 8800GT and Vista 32.

Helluva old thread to bump. Bioshock is a wonderfully atmospheric game, though, which makes it great in my opinion (to me, the most important aspect about a game is that it must engross me in its world/story/environment). It was definitely way too easy, though, especially late in the game (so much so it did distract me from the atmosphere of the game).

I agree with what this guy said in July.

You make a lot of valid points, especially about the cloning of SS2. However of all those I can only say the SS2 is a bad thing though (and the stupid enemies). I don't mind the art style and as long as the scripting make a nice story it's alright. But since it was almost a 1:1 copy of SS2's story...

Overall, I don't get how can one praise the game so high. It was fine, sure, but nothing major. Not to mention it can hardly kiss SS2's toes in terms of atmosphere. The story's almost identical though - since SS2 had a great story all the people that didn't play SS2 will think it's great and unique and what not. All those that played SS2 before and know who did Bioshock will immediately know that the developers went cheap and just copied everything.

SPOILER

Not to mention you're dead on with your last assumption :D I figured it out after like 2 hours into the game. The moment I saw the "ghosts" and a few things later on I jsut know this was a total clone of SS2 :D

You must of missed the official Bioshock thread then when the game was first released,I and many people had sound issues ie cutting in and out, took me 3 hours to get the game installed due to online activation and their server being overloaded, however worst to come was I found the game to be a big let down just plain boring and way overhyped even when I stayed with it until the end.

Anyway each to their own as they say.

I wish it was then it might of been decent, however SS2 is in a different league and I had a much more enjoyable experience with SS2 then I ever did with Bioshock.

I laugh every time people whine about games being 'the worst ever' and 'I demand a refund'. Then it turns out to be the (l)users machine/background processes/instant messaging/virii/p0rn downloading at the same time........makes me glad I'm not retarded like they appear to be.
All you need is a little common sense, a bit of thinking (yes, use your own brain for once) and a bit of patience. Then you wont have to come here, complain and act like a douche.

Oh, and yes, avoid Creative Cards like the plague......

I got an X-fi and mostly have no problems... I didn't install any of their horseshit bloatware though.

Obviously that was a general statement regarding the story only :) The fact that it was copied almost to the letter, the game mechanics were seriously dumbed down and the creepy/scary factor just wasn't that good (it wasn't bad though!), made for a far worse experience for me.

Now if I didn't play SS2 before, I'd probably be praising the game quite a lot more because it was the same story and the way they were building the atmosphere was the same for the most part. Another thing that they had in common was the last boss was a joke :p Ohh and BS had 2 different endings... SS2 had only one. But then again the story was told is such a good way that it felt like reading a book (and since when do books have several endings? :p).

I remember reading about that in the Firing Squad review when it came out. I suggest reading it to see what they did to fix the issue.

In XP, have you tried reducing hardware accel under Sounds and Audio Devices in Control Panel? (I specify XP because I don't know how Vista works)
(S&A Devices -> Audio -> Advanced {under Sound Playback} -> Performance -> Move slider towards none by varying amounts and see if it helps)
