I got in on that "deal" for bioshock on steam for $15 last monday. I've had nothing but problems with it since. The major part of it is sound issues.

I looked on countless forums, since the game has released 2kgames has not responded to a single email/forum/etc about it. People are pissed.

The issue is studdering/skipping with sound so much you can't even play the game. It happens on all sorts of configs from onboard sound to soundblaster audigy/x-fi/ you name it. Duel core/quadcore. XP or vista, etc.

I tried all the tweaks etc for this game posted on forums, updated soundcard drivers..downgraded them to about 5 different revisions. New video card drivers...new video card + new soundcard from other system. You name it i tried it.

How the hell does a company release such a dodgy sound system? It must just be the Unreal engine they use..cause it sucks. :(

How do you get refunds from steam anyways?

This is seriously the first time I've ever heard of sound issues with that game. Seriously. Ever. And you say it's widespread?

Wow, you got screwed then. I got in on the same deal and absolutely love it. I have my Mobo hooked up to my 5.1 home theater system via coax to a reciever. I piss myself everytime I hear a big daddy...but they're getting manageable.

I guess you already tried the patch?

Don't blame the game, the game is awesome, blame 2K Games for the horrible support.

I used to have a few problems with this game when it was recently released but mostly crashes, once nvidia released new drivers everything was good and the 1.1 patch made things rock solid for me.

It seems a lot of UE3 games are unstable, I wonder if it's the engine or just a coincidence with publishers rushing their developers.

I have problems with the sound on that game every once in a while. There's no sound, but if I restart it works.

If he bought it from Steam there is no patch. He downloaded the latest build straight to his hard drive. :)

I got it off Steam and have hooked it up like Roguepower has.

I get very concerned when I hear splicers because I can hear where they are mocking me, trying to kill me fromt...

A Big Daddy..... the Groan... the BOOM... BOOM... as they walk. Its atmosphere is as immersive as a Marines' in AvP. You feel like you are there, you get paranoid.... you get totally lost in the world.

I have not heard (no pun intended) of any of the issues you suffer from.

yah patched up and everything. Core 2 duo @3.1ghz, 2gig ram, vista32 sp1. realtec onboard sound or Xfi/audigy does not matter, 8800gts, 177.xx drivers (forgot exact ones). Pretty standard rig.

Its the only game I have problems in, but it is my only unreal engine game to try out though.

Its widespread. There is a huge thread on 2kgames forum. http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10663
It starts on 9-3-2007 and last post is this month. So basically 8 months and no response from 2kgames on the issue at all.

The game looks awesome, but I can't play it because of this sound issue. The game im sure is not meant to play without sound. :p

If you have a X-Fi card then you should disable your onboard sound, it could cause conflicts. I haven't tried using my X-Fi card in a while (replaced it with a HT omega claro), but their drivers were total garbage, I'm not sure if they've improved or not. I would try this personally, remove any sound card and wipe the drivers and everything completely off your system and try using just the onboard.

Seriously, I didn't know, but this is the only way to play now...frickin phenomenal. Same thing with GRID.

Go into device manager and disable your onboard sound completely. Then reinstall the latest sound card drivers and reboot. It should work fine.

If all else fails, try setting your whole system to stock and see what happens.

"How much is that doggy in the window?"
I hope you get to enjoy the game & get the sound fixed, Bioshock was really FUN! and that price is a steal. Did you install using the device manager vs. letting your operating system find the drivers? I remember using the majorgeeks audio drivers etc, make sure you use DCleaner or the equivalent & delete all the prior driver files.

Sorry to hear about your problems with this game. I also have the Xfi Extreme Gamer and was having some weird sound issues. Basically everything sounded way to "reverby", do I disabled that in the game settings and turned down all the volume sliders from 10 to 7 and have had no problems. I really hope that you get this fixed as I can honestly say that this is one of the most entertaining games I have played in a long time!

I had some sound issues with my Audigy 4 with some of the dialogue ie no speech, however the game IMHO has got to be the most overhyped game ever made, its boring ,short and not worth the money I paid for,I would rename it BIOCRAP but I know there are AT members here that actually like the game, anyway for me its never going to be replayed again even with my new Audigy drivers.

I haven't had any problems on Bioshock and I've played it on a few different systems.

Actually, last night I tried to play it on my laptop, but it has integrated Intel graphics. Sound worked great, but the framerate was way too low on my GM965 (outstanding for integrated graphics, can play many games at decent FPS, just not Bioshock/Crysis/anything designed to strain your computer's hardware)

To each his own, it's my favorite FPS to date. Did you listen to the audio diaries and really go through the game, or did you run and gun? It has an outstanding story if you're not in a rush to finish the game, but some people didn't like it for whatever reason.

It's not System Shock 2, but it's the next best thing.

I took my time,I did enjoy SS2 however Bioshock was a very big disappointment for me,other games like Stalker,Mass Effect,KOTOR I enjoyed much more.

You're obviously not reading 2k's support forums. Yes, it's fairly widespread, though I haven't run into this issue myself. I used to have the "black blocks in the middle of the screen" issue that's also fairly prevalent.

I recommend pulling the creative card and seeing if the onboard sound has the same issue.

Roguepower, are you getting true 5.1 surround sound out of your mobo, or is your AVR "upscaling" stereo to pro logic or something similar? Or does your mobo have DDL/DTS Connect capabilities?

The reason I ask is because I've never heard of any game having a compressed AC3 (DD/DTS) audio stream for output.

I'm pretty sure it's adapting it to 5.1. I don't have it set to Prologic, if anything it's on either "Surround" setting or Neocinema.

It's the P5Q Deluxe in my sig out to a Onkyo TX-SR501 Reciever

just wanted to chime in a say , that I've had zero problems with bioshock and I've switched my pc components out a few times. 1 8800gt - 2 800 gt- hd4870, e6600 - q6600, asus p5n32- evga 680i, all with no reinstall of os, none zip, nadda, zero problems
