Ok...played through a good part of the demo at lunch... initial impressions...

AWESOME IMMERSION. The atmosphere/immersion of this game is bar none the best I've ever seen in a game. The beginning sequence and introduction into the games world gives you that same feeling the first time you took the tram ride in Half-Life 1...but actually even better in my opinion.

The graphics are very impressive. Most of the water affects are downright creepy how real it looks. Of course this insane level of realism for some affects make the ones that don't look as real stick out like a sore thumb (good example is the splashing of water...you can clearly see that it is just 2D sprites. Still, the graphics are fantastic. I really liked that before you start the game, they have you set the gamma so that you can properly see everything in the game as the developer intended. I hate playing games and having to adjust the gamma several times because I think I'm missing stuff in the shadows.

The controls seem great...although the "Y" button for jump just isn't intuitive for me...but I'll get used to it soon enough. Everything runs butter smooth though...didn't notice one stutter, even during the cut scenes...that was impressive given the graphics.

I was on the fence about the whole "plasma" thing, but I'm definitely digging it now.

Anyway, this game definitely has a TON of promise. It went from a wait and see to a definite purchase after this demo.

My wife is really not going to be happy with me this fall. Great time to own a 360!

I just went home and played it at lunch.

OMG...

I'm so glad I bought a 360 last week. My computer couldn't handle this game. I played 20 minutes of it and so far it is the best, most immersive, beautiful, and creepy game I have ever played. I'm pre-ordering now for sure.

Well, I just started downloading, but the worst was before that...

I turned my 360 on and went to clean my remote (I usually use my remote when just navigating XBOX Live Marketplace) as I had a bit of grubby fingers 😱. No worries there, got that clean, but when I walked back out, I had a hardware error and a single red light! Turns out I was much luckier than most, but according to Microsoft ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917874/en-us ) I had a hard drive fault. Do you think I should be worried enough to take preemptive measures against losing game saves? Maybe buy a small memory card just to store things on for the time being.

EDIT:

Thinking about it too... my XBOX 360 is also out of warranty for this issue as the warranty was extended to a year, but I purchased my XBOX in mid-summer of last year and I believe I'm past one year or very, very close to it (I see people on the played games friend list at nearly 350 days for example). Since only RRoD is covered under the 3 year, if this HDD fails, I'll have to pay for a new one and I sure hope it comes with free lube, because Microsoft rapes you on the peripherals 🙁.

Hunt around. I've seen deals on 360 HDDs for as low as $50-$60.

Saw a little video of gameplay on TV. Looked a tad to dark/grainy, hopefully just from viewing through a second source.

The game makes you set your brightness at the beginning to ensure this problem doesn't occur.

I love games that do that. Zelda did that, and it helped a ton.
Can't wait to dl this. Wish I chimed in yesterday, today was a total surprise to me.

It does play very dark, but it really adds to the game play. This game is going to be awesome. The 21st can't come fast enough.

Wow this game is incredible. I only have 2 complaints.

1. I saw some invisible walls at the beginning when I tried to jump over the railing into the water.

2. There were a few times when my guy was turning when I wasn't touching the controller.

I know #1 is very picky on my side, but I'm just very critical of games 😛

However ... this game is going to kick major ass!

Wow. The very first scene I just sat there waiting in the water because I thought it was a cutscene. How in the name of god does this run on a 360?

Game was creepy, but what scares me even more is how it will eat my PC alive.

Game was awesome though. Glad I preordered it today.

I normally don't like games that are creepy and keep you in suspense, but I may just make an exception for this one 😀

Was the controller turning when you were aiming at an enemy? Because there is some major auto-aim going on in the demo.

Nothing I have seen, read, or observed playing this demo convinces me that this might not prove to be my new favorite game of all time. I don't always like very open-ended gameplay, but it appears they have implemented it in an amazing, fun way, and technologically and artistically the game seems to be unsurpassed. It reminds me of the first time I played the original Half-Life. I haven't been this excited by a new title in 9 years.

Ok, just played the demo and DAMN, this game is awesome! I'm interested to see what kind of hardware the PC will require to play this thing with the PQ and smoothness of the 360. Amazing game!

Hmmm sounds like I might have to fight my way through the game like I did with F.E.A.R. Games like this normally make me very paranoid and nervous. I've seen parts of the game that looked very freaky. But Fear IMO was worth it. I now have to decide, wait for the new 360 Rev(Falcon) and hook it to my 22" LCD or buy a 8800 series card and call it a day?

Well, FEAR was definitely creepy but only the 1st half of the game. The last half (to me at least) became a generic run and gun bang bang shoot em up which I quickly got bored with.

Bioshock is probably the 1st game in a long time to actually give mw chills down my back. Especially the part when you're locked in the medical lab room or whatever and the creator of Rapture comes on an old film reel type display. I was seriously panicking and going nuts. Definitely buying this for both 360 and PC... just because.

Anyone else having problems with this download? It may be a 360 specific issue and not the demo itself. For some reason it seems like my background download function doesn't work worth a damn.... and yes, I did verify (several times) that it was configured properly.

For the 120GB version? I wouldn't pay and buy the low-end drive again. I tend to fill up the little 20GB drive quite quickly.

You know though, I'm a bit on the fence over this game. I still don't like shooters on the console and that's what this game is. The game was fun, but I got annoyed because no matter how good I am with FPS games on the PC, I can't aim to save my life on the console! I just hate missing like a noob and wasting my bullets or my eve. My computer will have no problem handling this game, but the lack of 5.1 surround sound will be unfun, but I sometimes like using headphones when playing a game.

No anti-aliasing. I didn't look to see if anisotropic filtering was enabled though, but I highly... highly doubt it. Also you need to note that the rooms in the demo and the video shown after you beat it are quite small. It's like how my computer can get 400fps with 16x QAA and 16x QAF in Stormwind when I'm standing in a tunnel looking at one of the ends... there's very little to draw, but I most certainly don't get that much when looking out into a vast open land 😱.

Heh. I did the same.

Did the same as well...I was amazed that I was actually in game...Kudos to Irrational (or 2K Boston or whatever they are these days).

I played through the demo 2 more times last night and I am right there with you.

Favorite moments:
1) Breaking surface of the water and not realizing I was actually in game.
2) First time I injected the Pasmid
3) Plane tail crashing into corrider and water running all over the place.
4) room slowly filling up with water before jumping into the elevator.
5) The very end where the creator comes on the "movie screen" and the splicers are banging on the glass...just awesome.

I'm so impressed with the water affects the game has. Sure there are a few things that stick out as not realistic...but overall it is just amazing.

I didn't think I would like the plasmids, but they integrated them well into the story and I really like the way they setup the controls...so easy to switch between Plasmids and weapons...really is fantastic.

I wish I could teleport to the 21st and take the whole week off to play this game.
