Okay so I'm new to the whole building computer thing. I recently bought

gigabyte ga-p35c-ds3r F11
intel core 2 duo e4500 2.0ghz
1gb ram
500 watt ps
So much storage I could run a library. 🙂

Everything is setup turns on I can get to the post page. hit del to the bios page then it says prepare to enter setup.....then nothing. It just stays on that screen. What could I be doing wrong?
 
A little update. I tried restarting. Now it comes up, I go thru the same process It says prepare to enter setup...then it says detecting ide drives. then just stays there.

Suspect a problem detecting the hard drive. If your drive is SATA:

1. Try clearing the CMOS using the jumper on the motherboard.

2. Try booting without the drive attached, and check to see if you have to enable SATA in the CMOS. If so, set it to enable SATA drives, reconnect the drive and try again

3. If your drive is SATA or PATA (IDE), and it has a jumper, be sure it's set correctly.

If that fails, try another drive to make sure yours isn't bad.

okay so I cleared the cmos and was able to go directly to the bios setup.
not sure though how to enable the sata drive.
Nothing about it in the standard cmos or advanced bios. There are a couple of things in the integrated peripherals however.
Those are as follows:
Sata Raid/ahci mode (currently disabled)
sata port0-3 native mode (currently disabled)
onboard sata/ide device (currently enabled)
onboard sata/ide control mode (currently ide)

Are these what I'm looking for, or am i missing something

It sounds like it to me. If the selection to enable it isn't on that page, it should be somewhere else in the BIOS.

Do you have your manual? I don't know if you have Rev 1, 2 or 2.1 of your board. I'm downloading the manual for Rev. 2 as I'm writing. So far, I can see the Table of Contents. Check the section under Chapter 2 BIOS Setup and under Chapter 5 Appendix / 5-1, which has several sections on configuring SATA drives.
 
rev. 2 is what I have. Yes I have the manual. I've looked in those sections. It appears that those are the only sections about sata. the section which I mentioned above and the appendix section on configuring a raid which seems to be matter-of-factly way over my head. It looks like something i'm bound to mess up. from what you saw on the downloaded manual is that the only way to get it to recognize sata?

On p. 41, see this:

Hard Disk Boot Priority
Specifies the sequence of loading the operating system from the installed hard drives. Use the up or down arrow key to select a hard drive, then press the plus key <+> (or <PageUp>[/i]) or the minus key <-> (or <PageDown>[/i]) to move it up or down on the list. Press <Esc> to exit this menu when finished.

Make sure your SATA drive is the first HD following any floppy, CDROM or external options you select.
 
okay so a while later I have it where I can go into the bios with the hard drive connected. It recognizes it. However now it loops through the beginning screen. I've come the long way to a short distance. haha. I guess I'll keep working at it. I might come back on but it's gettin late so maybe i'll be advanced by tomorrow. Thanks for your help.
 
I looked this up and found this....why am I stuck in loop?

The problem is that the aready installed XP is
A. Thinks that it is still on the first mainboard.
B. It has no drivers, it has different memory and the video may not work with XP.

Could this be?
It then ask these questions which I answer in parentheses

Can you boot to safe mode? (no)
Try hitting the F8 key after the bios screen goes by. ( i did this)
You need to load the driver for that mainboard. (How?)

When it trys to load windows it is looking for drivers for the board and thinks it is installed on a new computer.

You may need to do an inplace reinstall and call MS to get a new PID. (Hmmm. don't know what those abbreviations are. I assume microsoft is the first.)

I also tried to just boot off the windows xp disk. No luck same loop.
 
From your first question, did you try to boot to an existing XP installation from another motherboard? That can cause massive headaches. Always count on doing a fresh installation when moving to a new board.

Do you have another drive you can use to test it? If the problem continues, I'd say your motherboard has some problems.
