Here?s my problem. I just flashed my A8N-SLI Deluxe from BIOS 1008 to 1016.

Now when I shut down my computer it only half way turns off.

Windows exits and my monitors go into standby like normal, but the computer still runs (leds are on, fans spinning, etc).

I have to hold down the power button for 5 seconds for it to completely shutdown.

Anyone know how to get it to shutdown completely (like it did before)?

When you booted up after the flash, did you set the BIOS back to DEFAULT settings?

I Winflashed it. During the flash it asked me if I wanted to clear the CMOS settings and I said yes.

However I did reset back to default settings within the BIOS.

I will try that and let you know if it works. Thank you.

UPDATE: Reset to defaults in BIOS and computer still will not shutdown fully. Do you have any other ideas I can try?

Try going into Device Manager and select "show hidden devices".

Do you see something like APM NT Legacy Device?
Does it show as disabled?
If so, enable it.

I opened every expandable menu in Device Manager and the only thing I could find that was close to what you mention is the Aspi32 located in ROOT\LEGACY_ASPI32\0000

Unfortunately I could not get it to work. I tried going under the Driver tab and clicking on Start and got this error message:

"The system encountered the following error while attempting to start the service

The system cannot find the file specified."

Is this the right thing to be looking for? What category would the APM NT Legacy Device be located under?

If the APM device was the culprit, it would show when you enabled Hidden Devices.

Try looking at your power management seetings in your BIOS.
Your problem has to be somewhere in there.

Here's my BIOS power management settings:

ACPI Suspend Type:

S1&S3 (other options are S1 POS and S3 STR)

APM Configuration:

Restore Power on AC loss - Disabled
Power on by PCI Devices, External Modems, RTC Alarm, PS/2 Mouse & PS/2 Keyboard - Disabled

Yes, it is set to Enabled. Sorry for not listing it. It is grayed out because I cannot change it.

What prompted you to update the bios?

If 1008 was working fine with no problems, I would just flash back to that one. I'm still running 1008 on my A8N-SLI Deluxe. I haven't tried anything past 1013, but anything higher than 1008 killed my overclock so I've stuck with 1008.

My basic rule with bios is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"

UPDATE: I installed the Vista Beta on a second HD and it shutdown fine.

So the problem is somewhere in Windows XP, not the BIOS.

Anyone know how I should fix it?

P.S. I updated the BIOS for the dual core support.
