BIOS update always good/beneficial/neccessary?

I have an ECS nForce3 mobo. I just checked the latest BIOS from the website and the latest improvements included the following:

-Support AMD K8 Rev:E6 CPU
-Support AMD K8 Rev:E3 3300+ CPU
-Enhance SATA HDD capability.
-Modify "MAC Media Interface" default to 'MII' and hide it

Based on this, updating my BIOS would not benefit me at all. I have a AMD Athlon 3200+ and no SATA HDD. Are there always other benefits to updating BIOS besides the ones listed? Wouldn't it just be safer if you kept your old BIOS which work anyway?

secondary question: I don't think my mobo has a protection (in form of a jumper) against BIOS writing. Does this mean I can just flash BIOS without changing anything. What does the CMOS have to do with BIOS? Does it reset the BIOS and does it take any role when flashing/updating BIOS? I have the impression I just leave the CMOS jumper on normal when I'm updating my BIOS.

Basically, CMOS is the chip that holds the BIOS. I'm not sure what the "protection jumper" is on your board. Most boards I've seen have a reset bios/cmos jumper which will set the BIOS back to default settings.

EDIT: I only update the BIOS if it fixes a problem I'm having or it won't detect my processor correctly without an update.

Really just have to play with them all and find what you like as you fine tune your system. IME all revisions act differently especially when oc'ing.
