i got a old pc from a friend .i tried to start it ,it starts but while booting the first bootable device i.e floppy it stops there ,the floppy`s LED indicator is on and the system just stucks there.I tried with another floppy drive ( imagining floppy drive is not working ) but it still does the same .i am able to go to BIOS everything looks fine on the Bios .
the system is old P3 488 mhz ,256 RAM, i havent checked the mother board model
any help is appreciated
thanks

Couple of possibilities:

Your floppy cable is on wrong - #1 on cable goes toward the power cable or its is attached to the board wrong.

or

In Bios - See if there is a 4th boot option, something to the effect of 'enable alternative boot device'. Make sure it's enabled. Or else it wont look any further than the 1st device in your boot selection.

hi
thanks for the advice.it did worked after i rearranged the cable in different way. At the moment I am trying to install a 120 gb maxtor hdd on it . it sees only 30 gb out of it ,now i got this idea to partition it into 20 & 100 gb respectively and make the 20 gb bootable ,hope it works (will it work ????!!!!!!)
come back to you
bye now

There is a chance that the older Bios won't recognize a HD of that size, and might need an update.

Good news is that if you purchased a retail HD, it came with software (or you can download it) to get around the limit.

hi
nice to be back again.thanks for the advice on flashing ROM on cd writer,at the moment i busy sorting out this old pc my friend( will do it definitely afterwards)
Now back to the old pc :
the problem is the bios gives me an error message
NTDLR MISSING
PRESS ANY KEY TO CONTINUE
and if i press any key it restarts again and stops at the same point. I checked all the cables and connections and everything is fine.
To avoid all these problems I downloaded the bios upgrade from mobo manufacturer and when i put the bootable floppy with bios upgrade it says bootable floppy ok ,NTDLR MISSING, i tried to force flash the bios(ctrl+home) upgrade it looks as if it is taking the upgrade gives me 10-12 beeps and it keeps on repeating the process ,doesnt stop.

So I loaded the os (xp) into another hdd and connected the hdd to the this one it doesnt give any error this time reads all the peripherals on the pc goes upto windows and it stucks there ,( it is looking for something which is missing ,may be NTDLR itself ) the hdd boots up normally on another working pc

i went to the microsoft site for help but all the help seems to intended for w2k ,w98,even on xp they ask us to do some thing on os menu (repair option ) but i am not able to got upto that layer

any one mail me the NTLDR FILE TO ME to wishartann@yahoo.co.uk
and the method to load it into the system mobo OR
am I missing to do anything OR any other suggestions
thanks for reading the long letter and thanks again for any help
