hi. I have a huge problem about my computer. I wanted to change the logo EPA with linux inside logo but I made a mistake. now computer does not start. only wants a startup disk and runs it. The message is Bios Rom Checksum error . I tried to reupdate the bios file with the original one but it doesnt work. How can I cope with this problem? My motherboard is Abit Ka7 and it has Award bios.

Tough Luck! I've heard of others in the same situation that were able to borrow a similar (not exact) Bios chip, install it in the sick mobo, boot into Bios setup, remove the borrowed chip (do not power down!!), replace the sick Bios chip, then proceed with flash. Another option you may have is to contact Abit in Fremont, California:Abit Support, explain the situation and just maybe they can fix you up. Wishing you all the best.

I heard Abit charges a nominal fee for a bios chip..give them a call..but you may be able to recover that one.

You can also try Unicore. They have BIOS upgrades for AWARD, Phoenix, American Megatrends. I'm needing to get a BIOS myself..mine died due to OC (I'm assuming) :|

UPDATE: Just talked with a guy from Unicore..the BIOS I need for an ABit KA7-100 he said will cost about $70!!! This is a whole upgrade "kit" with chip extractor tool, one year free updates (like you can't just flash it), manual, etc.

Anyone know a cheaper place to get one?

Hyakutake:

Wim's Bios page has a lot of good BIOS information, and one of the sections is dedicated to recovering a bad Award BIOS flash. (Click http://www.ping.be/bios/HTML1/faq.html for the FAQ page where it shows you how to recover a bad Award BIOS flash.

You're lucky; I flashed my Tyan Thunder 2500 and it screwed up somehow, but it only beeped 1-2-2-3, signifying BIOS ROM Checksum error (just like yours) and showed no display. It didn't even attempt to read the floppy so that I could attempt to recover.

NuovoTech:
I e-mailed Abit, with no response yet. I don't feel like (nor can afford) calling long distance and waiting on hold for forever (website says at least a 15 minute wait).

I did find a place that will get me a new BIOS for $23 Badflash.
Hyakutake - You may want to check them out.
