Hi,
Here is the problem:
bios on bootup does not detect secondary slave drive when plextor 1610A is secondary master. If I remove the plextor from the chain, then the wd hdd as slave can be detected on either of the connectors on the secondary channel cable. It also can be detected as master on either of the connectors w/out the plex. I have also tried switching to another cable and there is no difference. So, when the plex is attached as master (as recommended by plextor) the ide wd hdd does not show up in the bios or on the boot screen during POST half the time. Sometimes it doesn't show up in the bios, but is accessible from the MyComputer icon. Other times it shows up during post but both the plextor and hdd drive are not viewable as icons in mycomputer or in the bios.
What gives? I can't figure this out.
I just tried setting the plextor to udma 2 by jumpering a couple of pins.

any help is greatly appreciated. TIA.

Let's see. I was having a similar problem, maybe the same problem with the addition of my Plextor 16x CDRW. For whatever reason the slave device (a Kenwood CDROM) just didn't like to show up on boot when the Plextor was the secondary Master. After boot up I could reboot and everything mounted. My solution was to buy another IDE card and solve the problem by leaving the Plextor as master and the other drive as a master on the PCI card. If you don't find a solution with your existing IDE controllers its a simple 50 dollar fix.

I had a similar problem with the P3V4X I just bought on this forum.

Try downloading the newest 4 in 1 apollo 133a drivers. That fixed my problem. Before I did that it wouldnt locate the Plextor as a Secondary Master at all and the Device Master showed my DVD drive to be malfunctioning.

Have you tried running your system at default speed?

You could be running your bus right on the edge!
