BIOS - I need help.

I recently bought a new motherboard and processor, the Abit SE6 and PIII 700. I am able to run the PIII at up to 933 for only short periods of time. It is stable at 896 and 133 memory bus but will not consistently boot from a cold boot at the higher memory setting. So in essence it is really only rock stable at 896 with the 100 memory setting.

In a quest for more speed and stability I did a BIOS flash this weekend. Abit has a new VK version of the SE6 BIOS. I did the flash three times with no luck and then had to flash back to the SW BIOS. With the VK BIOS, I could only get into Windows ME in the safe mode. The system would hang right after the ME logo boot up screen. Here is the scoop from Abit:

Filename: SE6VK.EXE
Date: 10/31/2000
ID: VK NOTE:

Fixes Floppy and Game Port test failures.
Resolves STR instability.
Updates the integrated VGA's BIOS.

I thought my problems might be due to the video settings as I am using the onboard video. So I set my system to plain VGA before the third try with the VK. This did not help.

One nice result from my reset was that when in the BIOS screen with the VK, I had the option to go to 1.90 volts for core voltage. I used old trick of leaving the voltage set on max when I flashed. But it reverted to 1.85 volts max when I went back to the SW BIOS.

So anyway, that's my story.

My friend once had to reinstall Windows after a BIOS update. I am not up for that. Plus a reinstall may make my older BIOS impossible to use without another reinstall.
