Bios "forgets" about hard drive

My bios is AMerican Megatrends V3.3 and I have a 120gig Western Digital Special Edition hard drive. Whenever I turn my computer off and do a cold boot, the bios is unable to recognize the hard drive. It fails boot and asks me to insert a boot disk, but it never checks the hard drive. I have to go into the Standard CMOS and autodetect hard drives (Primary and Slave both listed as unavailable). It successfully detects my hard drive, I save changes and exit and it boots fine. If I restart my computer, it has no such problems. This only happens with a cold boot. Does anyone have any ideas?

Does it only forget the hard drive? Do any other BIOS settings get reset?
