Hey guys,
I have encountered a very strange problem getting one of my machines to post ... When I don't get the bios beep code for "failure to initiate video" I get one of a few responses from the box ... Either it runs without doing anything (all fans, devices running), Or it starts bios only to stop with incomplete sentences ... The video card(s) is new I also tested it with others, the drive runs fine tested it in this machine, the floppy is also fine ... I have checked all IDE cables and reversed them when all else failed ... I have taken out all cards besides the video card, and have pulled all drives at some time or another or even in combinations of all ... I even jerked out the RAM just in case ... Do I have a bad chip ??? I checked the Power supply and have switched everything over to a new board ... Same board by the way ... I even cleared the jumper to start from scratch and nothing ... The one thing I noticed is that the responses are random ... I may or may not get a post, I may or may not get a beep code, and I may or may not make it into windows setup ...But when it does make it into setup it seems to get about this far :
"Windows Setup M" it doesn't even get out the entire sentence ... Anyway here's the config ...
Abit ka7 100
AMD K7 800
256 Mb Ram
56x CDROM
several different video cards
3 1/2 teac

It say I have an invalid command file, but the drive is already formatted ??? The initial crash happened while playing a game ... One thing I'm playing next thing you know I'm staring at the desktop ... When I rebooted, I got the bios boot block error and everything else has gone downhill from there ...
Should I try anything else ??? I have no idea where to go from here ... I am at the end of my rope with this one .. It seems now I get no display the monitor doesn't even react when starting the machine ... No beep codes, nothing but fans and lights ... The "A" drive isn't even reading the disk, it does it's initial spin, as does the cdrom , but then nothing ... The hard drive formerly in this computer works fine in another computer so It's not a bad hdd ...
Thanx-
Ewok

Any ideas will be thoroughly exhausted, just hit me with them !!!

A bad command.com wouldn't give you bios checksum errors. What exactly happened when the game crashed? I think it can be one of two things, a virus or plain old hardware failure. I had a somewhat similar problem. I was playing Dave Mirra's BMX when my comp rebooted for no apparent reason and my hard drive was killed. It couldn't format or anything.

I agree, could possible be a virus, if you can't get to windows to run your virus scanner, try a clean install of the OS, if you have any important files you can back them up by placing it as slave on an existing IDE cable in the working system and copy them over to your hard drive.
