PWNED...my favorite word ! Just watched it on Linux and screw everyone who's against real player, it works great in Linux. BTW, they cut off the good part, but you can find it thru a blog linked from the enquirer site - they have a bit-torrent of the relevant section in quicktime format (another home run for Linux). Anyways, it was scary, I got scared even though I'm not even a student in that college....

Seriously though, most of these threats and scare tactics are BS - like microsoft detecting two copies of windows running simoulataneously within 15 minutes of the computer being stolen, and triangulating wifi, and FBI, SEC law enforcement - it all sounds very fabricated and untrue, which means that actually we're looking at an angry professor which is desparately trying to get his precious laptop back but has almost no chance of finding the thief unless he succeeds in scaring him.

Yeah but his ethernet MAC address, not the wireless card MAC address. The guy didn't connect using ethernet anywhere, which he probably couldn't do without registering that ethernet MAC address to his dorm ethernet. I doubt he's that stupid. Here at NYU they make you register your ethernet MAC address to your dorm room. However it is just as easy to register a router and hide behind that.

It would of been "pwned" if after the speech the prof walked right up to the suspect and said or did something, but he didn't. These are nothing but empty threats and the prof has no clue who has it. It's a bluf.

A lot of people are saying the prof got "pwned" or owned in English. I almost want to believe the prof, as it makes the world of academia seem so much more exciting than it really is.

Dude, I hate to break this to you, as you're supposed to be a tech guy, but laptops almost never have static IP because they need to connect to different networks, so they usually request a dynamic IP.

So I'm not really sure what you're talking about there, but static IPs are not relevant, and anyway the prof said he didn't connect to the a wired network port on campus, only to the wifi.

Ironically, Real Player is actually good on everything but Windows. The versions on WM2003, Palm OS, and Series 60 are actually bloat free and efficient. You don't have to get so sensitive about defending Real Player though because most people have to deal with that piece of sh!t on Windows machines at work. It is the slowest loading most bloated garbage ever on Windows.

Scared? If I was sitting in that lecture hall, I'd be laughing my ass off. Oh Noes, not Teh Transpond0rZ!

This is going to be on Snopes in no time, and that professor will be in the Hall of Records as the biggest, dumbest bastard ever to be paid six figures to teach a course.

http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/FinancialSecurity/story?id=692448&page=1

they took it down, it WAS on google news:
http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&lr=&c...ecurity/story%3Fid%3D692448%26page%3D1
anybody have it saved?

wow, there must be a lot going behind the scenes...... the theft actually occured almost two weeks ago, and it only became this national news after the recorded threat speech, which is probably a hell of a lot more damaging then whatever data was on that laptop (i suspect the prof exaggerates the importance of the data as well). Anyway, this thing has defintely made the univ look bad and is likely more damaging the actual theft.

btw, the story said the berkeley spokesperson said the prof took liberty with the truth with regard to which law enforcenment aganecies are involved. Also the prof is said to be resigned to the fact that his laptop is gone forever. Not sure why ABC would take the story down though........suspicious

oh...maybe because they had the video in there (on ABS's site) and the univ threatended them because it's copyrighted material. In that case they should have just taken the video down, not the whole story, but maybe the Univ threatened action if they don't remove it completely.

Funny....I believe the univ is going to be making even more mistakes to compound this story.....

I agree with you. The prof acts like a big dog, but he pees like a pup.

The professor made a smart move, although some parts of his speech could have been made more believable and better. No one is going to hand him his laptop while he sits idly by. He knew all of the stuff he was saying to begin with. He knows that he didn't get a call from Washington, he knows that he doesn't have a transponder. It was a worth a shot.

I'd like to hear from everyone who is calling him a moron what they would have done. In reality, there's not much you can do. It was his best chance at getting his laptop back.

He should have kept his mouth shut and had an actual FBI or NSA agent come in and give the speech...

He only made things worse...
