Billionaires Secretly Fund Vast Climate Denial Network

"Suzanne Goldenberg reports that conservative billionaires used a secretive funding route to channel nearly $120 million to more than 100 groups casting doubt about the science behind climate change, helping build a vast network of think tanks and activist groups working to redefine climate change from neutral scientific fact to a highly polarizing 'wedge issue' for hardcore conservatives.

The money flowed to Washington think tanks embedded in Republican party politics, obscure policy forums in Alaska and Tennessee

'These groups are increasingly getting money from sources that are anonymous or untraceable.'

It's obvious by their anti-science posts that they are funding many in here to post their agenda.

Yeah, I'm sure they're funding random people on a message board 🙄

You raised a very serious issue with the OP, but then made yourself look like a silly conspiracy nut with the 2nd post.

You must be new here or a paid shill yourself.

They have been outed in the past before.

I don't have time to read it right now but are they denying the global cooling they swore on in the 70’s or the global warming they are swearing on now?

It's a well known fact that climate change is a myth.

Now if you'll all excuse me, I need to return to my new indoor swimming pool.

You should have jumped on that band wagon Dave, the work is easy, you set your own hours, and the money is great.

Edit: Back on topic, I'm not sure what the point of the article is. Wealthy conservatives donate money to advance their agenda, using a completely legal and well established method. That's hardly front page news. The man made climate change people get donations, why should it be different for the other side?

I do like the nefarious sounding title.

that's like 100k a year per group. It's not a small amount but not big either if it's a group of people funded this over 11 years.
I bet Al Gore and other groups of the opposing camp spend lots of money too.
That's not a bad thing.

Politics and science cost money.

Has it never occurred to you that maybe if you weren't such an ass all the time, you could actually have a discussion with another living person?

Instead of discussing who's funding what groups in Washington, you have set this thread up to discuss how much you don't like other people, and how much other people don't like you.

Don't blame me, this is all your doing.

Don't worry Dave, the consensus scientists receive an order of magnitude more to create their side of the story. Those millions have to fight billions. Not to mention the political arm of a political party, which most of the media owes allegiance to. Who inform the masses that 75 out of 77 people is a 97% consensus.

It's not exactly easy going against the orthodoxy of the climate church.

Those in direct control of the temperature record can be political activists getting themselves arrested over oil pipeline protests without consequence. Lead authors of the IPCC can make ridiculous claims and still be taken seriously.

If this were a tale of David and Goliath, you know on which side you stand.

When I lived in Florida, they had an interesting description for environmentalists.

Question

What is an environmentalist?

Answer

Someone that just bought a house on the beach and doesn't think that you should be able to buy one.

Global Warming is just a scheme that a few academics are using to get grants and a few first world politicians are using to raise taxes. And oh, you realize that they have promised unending payments to the third world. But a first world politician never worries about giving away other people's money anyway...

Dave is completely correct. I know, because I'm one of the people being funded by these billionaires to deny climate.

I get paid $100 for each post in which I deny that we have a climate.

I need some cash right now so: I hereby deny that we have a climate.

it's obvious to the most casual observer the voodoo science of the frothing at the mouth eco-KOOKS and their sky is falling agenda is failing. It's nothing more then a hoax to scam the tax payer under the guise of "grants" to study nothing endlessly.

It's the usual "teach the controversy" schtick from the Right Wing, the same one used to deny evolution. It doesn't take a whole lot of seed money to arouse the Faithful, set them to spouting off seemingly plausible nonsense. It's what they live for, to affirm Faith as if it were fact. Not surprising coming from people who accept the idea of virgin birth.

Billionaires, of course, don't need to be terribly concerned about the consequences of climate change because they'll always be able to live in places that are nice, provided that such continue to exist, which seems likely. Meanwhile, profit is what matters, regardless of however much wealth they already have. It's compulsive competitiveness.

Science doesn't have a whole lot of power on its own standing. It is for sale to the highest (or any) bidder.

How does someone become as smart as a scientist without all the studying? By hiring one.

$120 million for people to believe in nonsense? Usually they're ignorant enough that they'll freely repost crap on Facebook if it says "repost this on your wall" at the bottom. And offer them a twinkie, or promise them if they forward it on that Bill Gates will give them $500, and you have all the advertising you need.
