Although it's a jest, I wonder just how much giving there would be from the rich without the tax write off incentive.
You do realize that a write-off simply lowers your taxable income by the amount donated, which means the donation costs you much more than what you save on taxes. Donations are not some awesome loophole to get you out of paying taxes.
For example, if you're taxed at 30% and donate $10,000 on an income of $100,000 it simply lowers your taxable income to $90,000 which saves you $3,000 on taxes. So you've still lost $7,000 more than you would have if you hadn't donated. The people that come out ahead on this are the charities, not the donors.
