A new U.S. senate bill has been redrafted to give President Obama the power of control to shut down the Internet in case of emergency situations. The 55-page draft that was obtained by CNET appears to permit the president to seize temporary control over private-sector networks in a cybersecurity emergency.

If the bill is passed, it would allow control to temporary disable Internet traffic in private-sectors. "A Senate source familiar with the bill compared the president's power to take control of portions of the Internet to what President Bush did when grounding all aircraft on Sept. 11, 2001."

Larry Clinton, president of the Internet Security Alliance, which contains large Internet and telecommunication companies such as Verizon, Verisign, Nortel and Carnegie Mellon University said "It is unclear what authority Sen. Rockefeller thinks is necessary over the private sector. Unless this is clarified, we cannot properly analyze, let alone support the bill."

The bill is still unclear what power of control President Obama might receive until it is properly addressed after the Senate's summer recess.

The bill is to protect against cyber threats and attacks on critical infrastructures such as the power grid in case of an attack from a broadband connection. Such control over the Internet may never be executed but with hackers getting more creative, national security becomes top priority in emergencies.

The internet routes around outages. Of course they have to call a plumber to do it, since it is, you know, a series of tubes.

Or they could just ask Al Gore, he invented the damn thing.

No "bill" necessary

All backbone points have already been upgraded.

I just finished upgrading the Cisco routers for the wireless carriers across the country to comply.

They saw how effectively the Iranians controlled a potential revolution by controlling the itarwebz and decided they might need that power one day:)

I suspect that other forms of Communication already can be Legally controlled by the Gov during Crisis situations. If that's the case, then extending that Power to the Internet is not really an outlandish issue.

The 'ruling elite' or 'NWO' or 'Group of 30' or 'military-industrial complex' or any combination of these are just mad they let the Internet get this way.. and now they will push laws to take away ability for mass amount of private citizens to mobilize and pass information freely.

Something tells me the "emergency" situation will be defined so broad that it can be invoked at the whim of any administration.

I really can't think of a situation that would require the Internet to be shut down. Seriously, what disaster, war, etc... would justify this. The only reason for it would be to silence the public in the event of a massive movement (ie. Iran).

Awsome that this could even be considered in America. More awsome that it is being considered by the "regular people's" party... When are people going to open their eyes and see what the Democrats really represent.

If not him, then the next President.

What situation would justify shutting down the internet (which includes VOIP and just about all businesses)? Is the internet suddenly going to crash into the Empire State Building?

They claim it will help protect critical infrastructure (e.g. power grid) that is routed through the internet. I thought the point of the internet was to provide a massively redundant network that could function regardless of shutdowns?

Anyway, sounds a bit too Orwellian for my liking.
