As scary as her lack of qualifications ever scarier the number of people who thought she was qualified.

How does the right get away with the glorification of ignorance?

Scientist = somebody who uses the scientific method.

Sometimes, Engineers perform practical experiments to solve problems. This could be considered science as they more or less want to test their hypothesis using the scientific method to come up with a solution.

In general, engineering is a practical field rather than an academic field, so, engineers are not "pure" scientists. But, science is one of the tools of engineering, and, often the foundation upon which engineering is built.

That said, I don't want to take anything away from "pure" scientists whose intent and focus is purely on the science. But, to say somebody is or isn't a scientist because of their education, or because of their intent, is shortsighted.

One could argue that Bill Nye is not a 'professional scientist', but, really, that would be a semantic argument rather than an argument about weather or not he has ever employed use of the scientific method to test an idea.
