So he's got a BA in mech engineering? I'm surprised.

She's mostly right.

"Bill Nye is as much a scientist as I am," Palin said...

Yea right, one is an engineer whose education is based in science, the other not so much or much of anything.

I think she's mostly right.

Science is a mode of thinking. It is a method of investigation. It isn't a job title. It isn't a degree. Putting on a lab coat and goggles doesn't make you a scientist. Rigorously testing the world for regularities and accepting the results that withstand scrutiny regardless of your preconceived ideas while understanding that all your conclusions are provisional to an extent is what makes you a scientist.

"Sarah Palin is the GOP's groundhog. Every once in a while she pops her head out. If she sees a camera, it's six more weeks of stupid."

:)

(Credit to my older son. He stopped by on his way home from work, and I mentioned this story.)

So I see she's regurgitating garbage headlines from Breitbart.

Bill Nye is an advocate for climate scientists, that doesn't mean that he's claiming to be an expert climate scientists. Attacking his credentials to deny climate change is just a deflection.

And then you hit Palin, sadly it's not the basement yet. there's still Bachmann to hit.

Bachmann is below Palin? At least Bachmann can use whole sentences.

As for the story, it has never been a secret that he has a Mechanical Engineering degree. Does that make him any less qualified than if say he was a biologist or geologist or other "real" scientist?

This was a running gag on one of the Big Bang Theory episodes. Bill Nye that is, not Sarah Palin.

Bill Nye is a bit more of science guy than Sarah Palin.
That's besides the point.

Bill Nye is quoting and advocating for scientists.
Which scientists are Sarah Palin quoting and advocating for?

Formal education doesn't preclude him from being considered a "scientist" although they do usually go hand in hand.

Considering Nye's resume and some of the real projects that he has worked on I'd consider him a scientist which I'm sure many could argue against but it would just be splitting hairs.

Frankly I don't see the relevance, he has an infinitely greater knowledge of science than Palin does.

Bill Nye is an engineer. Not only does it count, but it doesn't come easy.

If you really want scientists on Palin's side, here are 31,000+ scientists that have been against global warming since 1997. http://www.petitionproject.org/

There's plenty of mounting evidence that they're wrong. The crux is not if they sign a protest - but if they peer review and put their names behind a competitive scientific theory. It's not enough to simply say prevailing science is wrong - they need to present a compelling counter argument to explain the observational data.

They need to win hearts and minds via the scientific process using scientific data.

Now that we've established that Nye is actually an engineer, who among us agrees with Nye that "deniers" should be prosecuted and even jailed? Who wants to join Nye and bring their fascist proclivities out into the light of day?

He did not get a bachelor of arts in mechanical engineering. He got a BS in Mechanical engineering, which stands for... (drumroll) a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering.

I feel obligated to defend my fellow mechies.

can we further agree that palin has zero credibility in, well, pretty much everything short of hunting, and attention whoring?

That's like saying computer science degrees automatically make you a scientist. He's not a scientist at all, but is a great commentator and he works well on TV. No I don't like Sarah Palin either.

I have one of those. It's definitely more science than art. Bill is a huge proponent of science, and I'd speculate he follows the scientific method when solving issues fairly regularly. In no real way am I the traditional definition of scientist.

Oh snap! Right from the M-W dictionary
scientist /ˈsajəntɪst/ noun
plural scientists
Learner's definition of SCIENTIST

: a person who is trained in a science and whose job involves doing scientific research or solving scientific problems
a soil/marine/computer scientist

bolded for emphasis

Engineers are highly trained in science, math, and technology. Bill Nye is a science advocate and has done a lot for the school systems and the youth. He may not do original research, but he is well versed in science, enough to hold his own in public debates which is very demanding. This coming from Sarah Palin is absolutely hilarious. She couldn't read an abstract, let alone understand the article.
