I could see one reason why.

battery power...playing mp3's will suck down the juice...leaving little time for chat.

the technology will only go as far as it's power source.

*sigh* When will retards stop misquoting this? You know Thomas Watson, Chairman of IBM in 1943 was also quoted to speculate, "I think there is a world market for maybe five computers." But what you have to realize was both of these quotes from very intelligent people were accurate for the time in which they were spoken.

Use common sense.

Couldn't agree with you more. You can't ever mention Gates without that stupid quote coming up. I'm sure those who bring it up, though, have *never* said *anything* stupid in their entire lives.

cellphones that have multifunctions suck at actually doing all of the functions. Dedicated hardware always performs better and has higher quality than integrated hardware. I have yet to see an example counter to this.

It won't be until the next generation of wireless phone chipsets come out. There needs to be a dramatic improvement in usable (not standby) battery life before phones should be allowed to have more capabilities.

In the future we won't even see these hybrid products as 2 in 1 and 3 in 1. It'll just become another feature. Look how much PDAs have evolved. PalmPilots use to be organizers, and that is what they did well. Palm once said that they didn't make a pilot with a colour screen, because people didn't need it, and the demand wasn't there. Then pocket Pc came out and combined effective organizers, media viewing ability, web surfing, voice recording etc, etc. The PDA will continure to evolve and include features like a cell phone, better mp3 playback etc.

Personally I'd love a single device like that. It would have to be high quality in each area, and not a bunch of crappy things stuck in one piece of equipment, but that is on it's way. In my line of work, real estate, having all of those in a single device would be great.

Think about the convenience of having a single device to sync. Set your phone* next to your computer and it syncs all of your music, email, photos, contact information, everything. Someday with enough wireless bandwidth, you'll be able to sync from anywhere.

* Before long, there's going to be a new name for these things, because they'll no longer be phones. Communicator or something Star Trekky. :p

Perhaps at the outset, but as time goes by the low end of technology catches up to the previous high end technology. At that point, only professionals or afficianados require the high end equipment. The average person will be happy with a lesser product that doesn't require carrying 5 different devices.

They never really caught on, though, because they were WAY overpriced and the interface SUCKED. To make things worse, the operating system was unstable, and needed to be patched a few times before it worked correctly. Even then, the synchronization wasn't very reliable and the web browser was pretty useless. In other words, it was a typical 1st generation Microsoft product.

Microsoft hasn't done much to improve the product, either, but good ol' BG still has the balls to say the "SmartPhone" junk they've been pushing will eventually overthrow the iPod?!? Wow, that's some mighty strong crack he's been smoking.

Huh???? They released like 4 new versions of the mobile version of Windows since then. What you're saying like like saying "Windows XP sucks because Windows 95 crashed all the time!"

This is correct. Nicely put.

I want a phone that I can make calls on... and that plays digital music like a home theatre, and one that has a calendar and planner function as good as Outlook 2003, plus I want it to take photos as well as a professional quality SLR, and I want it to give me a blowjob whenever I'm feeling particularly saucy.
