the H1 visa cap absolutely sucks. i graduated from an ivy league, and granted that does not give me instant access to a job, but you'd think after 9 months of searching after graduating i'd have found someone who'd want to take me. decent grades, good degree, great institution, got loads of interviews but they'd come to a very abrupt end after they as 'whats your work status?' for which i'd have to say i require sponsorship...

once the quota was filled, left the US and went to europe. but it is sad thinking that while i was in san francisco the mexican population would increase on a daily basis. someone above mentioned this point, but it just makes no sense to be allowing this inflow of illegal immigrants, hell bush even SPONSORED some of it 2 years back in which he granted green cards to tons of illegal immigrants in california, but 'good' people who'd actually raise the national IQ average and push america forward are being thrown out the country.

sad, sad, sad.

Well said, and I'm sorry to hear about your predicament. I know people who are on H1-B that want to get different jobs, but it's difficult for them to do so because (post 9/11), some companies are not offering H1-B or sponsorships anymore. Plus, H1-B is only valid 3 years at a time (a maximum of 6 years)...

thats a HUGE problem too. my sister just got her H1 renewed. so she basically has 3 years now. she works in a non-profit company, which i think lot would agree benefits the society in california and the US. she does projects on education etc. so "good" stuff. her non-profit will not sponsor her green card. hence, now she has to worry about changing employers, transferring her green card, having her new employer sponsor her green card. or get married. wonderful, thats the thanks for helpign society!

I think the next step is for your sister to apply for a green card, but the fee is quite expensive. Talk to a immigration lawyer, maybe your sister's company is willing to sponsor your sister's green card application

A separate issue I see more of a problem is how foreign students are not allowed to work while on student visa. 1) they are paying the highest rates possible for their education and 2) required to have the expense of flying back home on breaks in order to make some cash.

Give them 20 hours a week and require they must either pick an internship where their work can not become commercial or enter into non-skilled work, either way at minimum wage.

I don't think Gates goes far enough. Instead of just raising the H1-B cap we should be increasing the number of people we allow immigrate into the US. The more people comming here means more jobs, more innovation, more tax dollars, more money for social security. If we bring in a few more million people a year in their twenties and thirties we would never run into a problem with keeping social security solvent.

I dont think we need to increase the number of people we allow to imigrate here, but instead we increase the QUALITY of people that we allow to migrate here. we do this exactly via h1 visas.. people that get hired are productive people that can add value from day 1.

No, you need to increase the NUMBER, as do many countries in the world.

I read a newspaper article a while back about how (IIRC) the UK, US, Germany, France, italy etc ALL need a LOT of inward migration because they have aging populations, and there will be a shortage of workers (every kind, even basic jobs like movers/refuse collectors/street sweepers - which don't require a degree), to support the population.
The US might have been there, I'm fairly sure it was, but that's the problem with people complaining about immigrants, those people are idiots, we need immigrants.

Some parts of Italy (and probably other places) have NEGATIVE population growth. The population grows older, people live longer, and there are fewer young people born all the time. That means not only will things like SS fail, but so will the economy if there aren't enough workers.

Raising the number of skilled workers who can come into a country = win, especially if they fill a skills gap shortage (in the UK, we're talking doctors, nurses and teachers, don't know about the US).
People need to stop being afraid and accept more immigrants who work hard and get things done, and don't sit on their asses expecting everything to be handed to them, or them being able to sue if anything goes wrong.

Dead wrong. Low-income illegals suck way more from the system than they contribute. Educating their children costs far more than they cotribute in property taxes. They don't carry healthcare, so they suck it from the government.

I support more H1B visas if the government really, really clamps down on illegals. It seems like a good idea....but you HAVE to allow people in who will contribute more than they suck away. H1Bs generally do, Mexicans generally don't

Everyone in college cheats now, so that explains why our college graduates are becoming dumb. To add insult to injury, lots of engineers in school want to become engineers not because they want to, but because ot "pays alot". I know about 4 friends who are taking EE and don't even want to do it. What is the point of putting your self through so much agony for something you do not want to do.

Um, it's not just Americans that cheat. From the stories I hear from my Indian friends, it's not that uncommon abroad. I don't think it's fair to generalize that US college graduates are dumb because of rampant cheating. Granted this does happen, but it's not isolated to the only the US.

Also, unless you become a doctor, an engineer, or a lawyer your family will look down on you. From my experience, quite a few of the immigrant engineers I know don't like what they do, but it's all they know. They feel like they didn't have the opportunity to explore different paths.

Is this partly related to the so-called "brain-drain" out of 3rd world countries? For example, highly educated people from these countries want to leave their own country and come to the United States. Their own country needs them to stay there because of the advantages of having smart people there. Is this H1-B a response to that?
