Ever since George Elliott bought his son a 1963 Ford Fairlane to race around the tracks in Northeast Georgia, the man who would become known as "Awesome Bill from Dawsonville" has charged straight ahead to the checkered flag. Bill Elliott's run came to a gentle, but not complete, halt Thursday afternoon in New York. The 48-year-old announced that next year he would run 15 races on NASCAR's top circuit
Elliott amassed 55 Winston Cup poles, 44 Winston Cup wins and more than $33 million in earnings. He also took home the points championship in 1988, and was named NASCAR's Most Popular Driver a record 15 times.
