Bill Cosby invited the public Monday to turn pictures of him into Internet memes using a generator on his website that facilitates putting words onto the images he's offering and then sharing the results.

The results were brutal. The generator has since been removed from the site without explanation, along with erased social media mentions of it from Cosby's personal account.

Initial reaction to the idea -- which was sent out in the afternoon to the legendary comic's nearly 4 million Twitter followers -- seemed to be confusion, as well as dread over what might result, given the allegations of sexual assault by a number of women that have plagued the 77-year-old in recent years.

While known primarily for his stage act, his classic sitcom "The Cosby Show" and the animated series "Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids," the legendary comic settled a lawsuit in 2006 with a woman who said he drugged and sexually assaulted her in early 2004 at his home outside Philadelphia, the Associated Press reported. The woman said that he assaulted her after giving her pills.

The photos offered by the meme generator are stills of the performer from "The Cosby Show," which ran from 1984 to 1992.

Shortly after the challenge went out, the #CosbyMeme hashtag had been taken over by unflattering images of the comic.

The reason for the meme generator is unclear, and although submissions are subject to review before they are posted on the Cosby site, there's little to prevent people for sharing their unapproved creations off the site.

Attempts to reach Cosby for comment were unsuccessful.

I guess the youth's perception is very different than those of us who grew up watching him.

This is great. What a bad time for him to do it.

We didn't know he was a likely rapist.

We also don't know the truth. Celebrities are notoriously targeted by gold diggers.
I generally have little trust in women who go into celebrities bedrooms and cry rape.

Oh lord. I didn't know he raped 13 women. That probably means its actually true, and it probably means it was actually 31.

I don't get why the rape allegations are all of the sudden some kind of big thing. Cosby has been getting accused of raping people for over a decade.

Also, do people really still not understand the internet? Was #askrkelly and #mynypd not evidence enough that if you think this is a good idea, you're an idiot?

It's the cause de jour. It'll be forgotten in a few months, much like Ferguson, Bring Back Our Girls, KONY2012, Occupy, and all the other hashtag movements.

Was he ever convicted in court?

I don't think he has ever even been indicted. The allegations were always for so long ago and he did a good job discrediting the accuser, IIRC.

Do I think he raped those girls? Well, of course! Do I think them coming forward isn't lining up with some kind of timeline in their lives? Well, of course! Nothing better when you're broke than to come forward and seek an out of court settlement for a nice, undisclosed, chunk of change. Do I think him being exposed as a rapist, even for purely monetary means, is a bad thing? Not at all. I have similar feelings about the 7th Heaven guy. I have no doubts his wife chose to release this information at a precise time in order to get more from the divorce, but that isn't so bad as he might have to actually now be held accountable for being a child rapist.

$100 says 99.99999% of twitter users didn't actually know about the allegations until that one guy said something.

I hate twitter slacktivism.

EDIT: I should add... I'm not defending Cosby or Rape. Certainly not my intent. If he did the crime he ought to be served justice. If he did the crime, the judicial system ought to be involved.

That whole internet thing. Those accusations go back far more than a decade, but they were easily buried before the age of free, unfettered information aggregation.

....and Ted Cruz and his pals wants to make sure that our access to dirty secrets is locked behind a corridor of pay walls. :)

I wonder how much the "rape tier" package will set me back?
