Explain to me again how it's Clinton's fault that Bush flushed most of the budget surplus down the toilet with that absurd tax rebate?
Well there was no budget surplus, only a projected budget surplus, which would ultimately not have been collected whether or not Bush gave the ADVANCE on an already scheduled tax reduction. You do remember it was an advance on a scheduled tax reduction, right?

So that money was either:

- Not going to be collected to begin with
- Or returned in the following year's tax refund

So at the very worse, it made the BUDGET DEFICIT larger (which it did not), temporarily. If you remember correctly, the failing economy preceeded the budget shortfalls and deficits. The budget shortfalls and deficits did not preceed the failing economy.

Questions?

But if you insist on giving Clinton credit for the 90's economy, I'll be happy to let you. He can have the credit - but he'll have to take all of it.

This has to be one of the most idiotic things I have read in a while....do you really believe that the measly tax credit that was given out in any significant way impacted the "Budget surplus"....please, the Econ tanked because it was based on a wing and a prayer....to blame any one individual is rather stupid.

I dunno...$300 * 100,000,000 = $30,000,000,000. That seems like a lot of money.

I pulled the 100,000,000 out of my ass. I just figured roughly 1/3 of the people in the country would file for it.

Sure we do. It's helps stir up the liberals so we can identify them.
The thing is he isn't a Liberal. His wife on the other hand is.

I hear that he is going to debate Bob Dole on 60 minutes. This should be interesting because Dole doesn't resort to the the Liberal Bashing that his fellow Republicans do and is close to being Clinton's intellectual equal.

The final bill was 38 billion. The projected surplus was 57 billion. Oops. I guess those schools didn't need new textbooks anyway.

You're not remembering things the way they actually were. In 1999-2000 the government collected more in taxes than they spent. So campaigning on reducing taxes was not a bad move by Bush. But by the end of 2001 it was a matter of paying out advances with money they didn't have. The economic climate no longer supported such extravagance. What's worse, 39% of the tax cut funds went to the top 1% income bracket. And the rebates were not part of the original tax cut, they were tacked on later when the economy began to fail.

It wouldn't matter. This was a scheduled rate reduction, it was simply a matter of 'pay me now with a tax rebate or pay me later with a reduced tax rate'. That money was earmarked OUT of the budget, when it actually left the public coffers, whether it was given back one year, or simply not collected the next, is really irrelevant.

Maybe he could run the country from the tv telling Bush what he should do. That would be so cool.

Bill Clinton is an idiot? Screw up this country?

It seems that you have your President's confused. Clinton was a good president, not the best ever, but a good one.

Bush has let the country fall apart. Anyways, what do you think about GWB if Clinton is an idiot?

Let people keep more of their own money during bad economic times isn't an "extravagance". During good times, terming it "not a bad move" is faint praise indeed.

BTW, the Congress writes all the spending bills not the president. Given that you obviously "remember things the way they actually were", tell me how many balanced budgets Clinton submitted when his party held control?

Moonbeam, you crack me up. Most of the time, I disagree with what you say, but in this thread you have epitomized hilarious parody. :)

I wonder what Bill's going to try to sell? Maybe after a CBS intern hits him with a sexual harassment suit he'll go away...NAH!

Great to see so many people blinded by Clinton's greatness.

Just saw the Clinton/Dole matchup on 60 minutes. Suprisingly, I thought Dole really trumped Clinton and had much better points. The best line was when he was talking about educating Iraqis to surrender. He said "Maybe there's a role for the French in Iraq after all."

LOL. Classic.:)

I liked that comment, too; however, I don't think Dole "trumped" Clinton. I am by no means a Clinton fan, but I agree that domestic affairs cannot go to the wayside because of war.
