biking apparel...does it do anything?

I recommend at least buying a pair of FOX biking shorts. The material is such that you can get them as dirty as possible without ever discolouring them permanently. They also contain cushioning in your ass which makes a noticably more comfortable ride. I don't have experience with upper body wear but I believe the main benefit would be that much of that material is made to "wisk away" your perspiration making your ride more comfortable/enjoyable.

Yup, that about covers it.

You can purchase special under shorts that have wicking/padding to helps with the long rides if bike short affect your vanity. Or, simply wear a lose fitting short over the bike short.

I already mentioned that... 😛

Some people just dont fit certain saddles... even with the padded shorts... they will experience numbness.

depends on the apparel
that is a totally general question man

you can buy shorts with padding in the ass for the bike seat, that LOOK like regular shorts, you can buy shorts with padding, that LOOK like biking shorts

you can buy clothes that will keep you warm, you can buy clothes that keep you as cool as possible...

you'll have to look around.
hit up your local bike store and check out the clothing.

I believe in spandex. I've had a few occasions where I've used the "flesh braking system" (e.g., truck passes me on the left, then makes an abrupt right turn into an alley without signalling) and, though I've gotten pretty torn up under the spandex, the spandex itself didn't tear and I didn't have to pick dirt and rocks out of my wounds.

I'm not sure what the point of biking shirts is; I just wear a snug-fitting t-shirt.

For cold weather, I wear a turtleneck and long underwear under my bike shorts. Sounds strange, but doesn't look nearly as silly as it sounds.
