A good pair of Pearl Izumi shorts and gloves make ALL the difference on a 20+ miler, wait til you get clipless pedals and shoes, then you become serious. Then come the sunglasses, then the Giro or Bell helmet.
It tends to get out of control if you let it, then you start hangin out at your LBS and lookin at 4-digit road bikes, Then the tours start, next are the spin classes in the off season.
It's not pretty, but sure is fun.
...after you do all that... you're officially a bike snob... and you start laughing at anything shimano.![]()

Out of sheer currioucity, what exactly does wearing a maxi-pad feel like?:QOriginally posted by: Bootprint
Biking shorts make it feel like your wearing a maxi-pad, until you get use to it.

That's just...wrong. My condolences to your perineum.
Hehe...you're going to put on some bike shorts, go ride, and then spend 20 min smacking yourself in the head for not having done so sooner.Originally posted by: Goosemaster

Check out Voler clothing if you don't want to pay for Pearl Izumi stuff. It's much cheaper and very nice. It's really all I wear other than my team kit (Sugoi).
Voler website
What, the PI or the site I linked? $40-60 for a pair of shorts is cheap if you're talking good stuff. The low-end crap like Canari just isn't worth it.Originally posted by: Goosemaster

Seriously though, that stuff is EXPENSIVE as HELL.
Yep, they all have padding (called a chamois, even though it's not actually made of chamois any more). The padding is there to pad your butt and to protect you from chafing. It's cut so that it moves with you as you pedal so that the only thing rubbing against the seat is your shorts, not your nether regions.Originally posted by: Jeff7181
Biking shorts have padding? That's news to me... just curious though... what do you need padding for? In my youth I rode a bike with a solid plastic seat a greater part of the summer and never experienced any chaffing, bruising, or even discomfort.

You also have to remember that the typical adult male is like 170lbs so there's a lot more pressure on your butt riding around than there was when you were a kid.![]()

Unless you are on a road bike with "snails"
Those things takes soooo much waight off your ass, and decrease wind resistance immensely.
Agreed. Bibs feel weird at first, but are definitely more comfy overall since they don't have an elastic waistband.Originally posted by: Don_Vito
What in God's name are "snails"?
FWIW, I strongly prefer bib shorts, which are comfier IMO (part of it is that I am tall enough that regular shorts tend to ride uncomfortably low on me).
