Bike

Looks fine, you don't need anything fancy for 2.5 miles. I bike everywhere and it works great. Only sucks when it's raining. You'll save a lot of money though.

If it's going to be a commuter bike, why a mountain bike and not a road bike?

Because with a road bike you have no option but to use the road. On my daily 2x 10km commute I'm off-road for about 2km. I wouldn't have that option on a road bike. Plus I'd look like a 50 year old Lance Armstrong wannabe and I would have to wear pink lycra shorts and I don't want to do that.

you != OP... or do you? and for a road bike, no you dont have to wear lycra shorts, etc...

Are you the OP with a second account or something? Nobody was talking to you.

i see nothing wrong with that bike... but if you are going solid frame, just get a road bike, it will be easier to ride, and depending upon the handlebar setup, could be an upright ride... at that price point, just get whatever you feel you like the most really.

Wut? Fuck yourself retard, this is a discussion forum. I'm telling you why a road bike is a bad idea - because it's limiting and because poofters ride road bikes.

Hey go blow your sheep. I asked the OP, not you. I don't give a shit what crappy bike ride you do - it has nothing to do with the OP's commute. You want comments on your bike ride start your own damned thread.

OP's looking for opinions on bikes. You tell him to get a road bike. I tell him that would be a stupid idea. What don't you understand about discussion.

Pick up a decent road bike for around $150-200 and spend the rest on a pannier/messenger bag and a nice lock. It sucks carrying stuff like groceries from the handlebar on a road bike, but they're much more fun to ride than a mountain bike. It kind of depends on what kind of campus you're on, though. If you have bike lanes everywhere and decent paved roads, then a road bike will be just great. It doesn't even have to be an expensive bike - I have a Schwinn Varsity (I think it's a late 70s or early 80s model, I forget). It's heavy as hell (but built like a tank) and a little too "vintage" (stupid stem shifters, lots of useless chrome/steel, soft foamlike handlebars instead of modern handlebar tape), but it's more fun to ride than my stolen Giant Rainier was, despite not having amenities like nice modern shifters, 21 speeds, clipless pedals, etc.

The point, dummy, is that you can't go offroad with a road bike. I was using my personal situation as why that's a problem. Even if he doesn't want to commute offroad, if he buys a road bike it's never an option.

Jesus, do I need to write it in crayon for you?

If he doesn't need to/want to go offroad, he can buy a road bike. I don't know why you guys are defending this little spit with your lives, they're both options and it's up to the OP. You're making it sound like no one should ever buy a road bike because it can't go off-road.

Having ridden both types of bikes, I would recommend the road bike. It's more fun to ride, "seems" faster and has a thinner profile for slipping between parked cars and stupid motorists who don't know how to stay in the CAR lane.

so you are saying, you can't ride a road bike across grass? or dirt? at all? again, in YOUR example, YOU can't use a road bike... but if you read the OP, he never mentions having to go off road...

hehe, dummy, you are so smart.

I'll try to break it down in a way you'll understand.

Buy a road bike = cannot go offroad
Buy a mountain bike = does everything a road bike does, plus goes offroad.

exactly, i have a MB here at school, i HATE it. it takes more effort to ride, its not as smooth on the road, the handling is not the same etc... the road bike i used to ride (not a racing bike, but a city bike, upright etc) was easy to ride, smooth, handled well, the tires allowed for easy maneuverability, and off road, on grass, or dirt, etc... its a little more rough, but still able to be ridden on.
