Fla. Cyclist Killed Trying To Beat Train To Crossing

POSTED: 5:40 am EST November 7, 2005

OAKLAND PARK, Fla. -- A cyclist was killed over the weekend after trying to beat a train to a railroad crossing in Oakland Park.

The Broward County Sheriff's Office said 39-year-old Guy Merkle began pedaling furiously as he approached the tracks Saturday night.

Witnesses said the gates at the crossing were down, lights were flashing and the train's horn was blowing.

Authorities said Merkle's body was thrown more than 100 feet.

An autopsy is planned, according to the report.

It was probably the train.

Wouldn't it be funny if it wasn't the train and something like a heart attack from overwork from trying to beat the train. 😉

This guy gets a Darwin Award. Bikers that do that crap are annoying anyways.

I don't care how good a cyclist you are... you are NOT going to beat a train....

Now you know... and knowing is half the battle.

😉 Hahahaha.

How fast does a train actually go though. Because at a fast, very short sprint, Cat-1 riders can hit like 40+ mph.

When I'm approaching a RR crossing, my first thought is "let me see if there is a train coming." And if there is a train coming, and the gates are down and/or the lights are flashing and/or the train is blowing its horn, gut instinct is to stop, not to try to beat it. And I'm sure a lot of you feel the same way. It's sad that some people don't, and that they end up dead. What's even more sad is that in some RR grade crossing accidents, the railroad gets sued. And the saddest part is that the train's engineer can take the death pretty hard.

Yeah! Bikers that run into trains really piss me off, too!

Where I ride Amtrak goes through a few times daily at about 80-90mph.

I wonder if he did any damages to the train. And If he did, is he liable?
I'm sure any damages he did to the front of that train will wash off with a waterhose.

People like this are plain stupid. I am a Conductor for the railroad and you see people try to beat our train ALL THE TIME. Yes most of them make it, but there is that slim chance that you won't. And if you don't make it there is NO WAY IN HELL we are going to be able to stop. It would take us several miles to stop a 12,000 Ton train moving 55mph. A car doesn't stand a chance much less a guy on a bike. I can only image the mess that made, if there was much of anything left.
